A century of Greek heritage
This weekend will mark a major milestone for part of the Weirton community as All Saints Greek Orthodox Church will be celebrating its 100th anniversary.
A variety of worship services, social events and other activities are planned, with much in the works for the last two years, but the highlight is sure to be visits from two very important members of the Greek Orthodox faith.
Archbishop Demetrios, Geron of America, and Metropolitan Savas of the Pittsburgh Metropolis will be in Weirton this weekend, celebrating with members of the church during services on Saturday and Sunday.
Archbishop Demetrios leads more than the 1.5 million practicing Greek Orthodox Christians across the country.
Metropolitan Savas oversees all of the Greek Orthodox churches in the Pittsburgh region, including All Saints.
It truly is an honor to have both of them visit the Weirton community, and we’re sure the city’s residents will make them feel welcome.
Former church members, as well as visitors from throughout the region also are expected to attend.
The weekend also will include a “walk through history,” with photographs, videos and other memorabilia on display showcasing the 100 years of All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, from its founding in what is now north Weirton to its present location on West Street, as well as its community service and various organizations.
Celebrating a century is a major accomplishment for anything, especially something such as All Saints, which has become such a focal point in the Weirton community.
We congratulate the All Saints parishioners, and thank them for being such a major part of Weirton and its history.
