Edison spikes Big Red, Brooke

STEUBENVILLE — Edison defeated Steubenville 25-22, 21-25, 25-21 as part of the Dig Pink volleyball tournament on Saturday at Franciscan University.

Edison’s McKenzie Morrison tallied 13 digs, two kills and an ace. Kayla Huff had 18 assists, three blocks, five digs and one kill. Allison Crawford tallied 13 kills, 13 digs and one ace. Kayla Wood added six blocks and two kills.

Anna Taylor had eight points and seven kills for Big Red. Sidney Snider tallied 10 points, four kills and two blocks. Leah Ferguson recorded 11 points and 10 assists, while Taylor Williams added 13 assists and seven points.

Later on, Edison downed Brooke 21-25, 25-18, 28-26. Morrison had nine digs, one assist and two kills. Crawford tallied 23 digs, seven kills and three blocks. Huff added 19 assists, nine blocks, seven digs, six kills and four blocks.

Central inducting five into HOF

STEUBENVILLE — Steubenville Catholic Central High will host the 2017 Athletic Hall of Fame Dinner and Induction Ceremony on Sept. 28 in the cafeteria and Lanman Hall.

Central is inducting Benji Clause, Mike Haney, Jim “Red” Kelly, Frank Marcino and Dave Tuttle into the hall, as well as honoring the 1946 undefeated Crusader football team.

The induction ceremony is free. Dinner is $25 per adult and $18 per student 18 years old and under. Tickets can be purchased in the main office by Sept. 21.

Football, cheer signups available

WINTERSVILLE — Registration for Upward Sports flag football and cheerleading for those in grades kindergarten through sixth is open at registration.upward.org/UPW64470.

Forms also can be filled out between 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today and Friday at Crossroads Church. Registration is $65 per child. A limited number of player scholarships are available.

Evaluations and signups will take place at the Upward field behind the Wintersville City Building from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday. For information, call (740) 264-9679.

Big Red boosters to meet

STEUBENVILLE ­– The Big Red Boosters Club will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Harding Stadium Field House. All are welcome. Memberships will be available.

TORONTO — The Toronto Rod and Gun Club will host a 3D archery shoot today.

Indians win 17th straight

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Indians earned their 17th straight win Saturday, topping the Baltimore Orioles 4-2 behind a pair of timely swings for Jay Bruce and Francisco Lindor.

Bruce’s fourth-inning single put the Indians ahead for good as Cleveland became just the second team in the expansion era — since 1961 — to win 17 straight in a season.

The crowd of 30,459 stood throughout the ninth inning as Cody Allen retired the heart of Baltimore’s order for his 25th save.
