Hit the deck: A family of three rented a pontoon boat at Austin Lake, but their fishing trip was cut short when they heard someone yell "get out of here" followed by two gun shots, the second one splashing into the water very near them, Wednesday. The husband told his wife and son to get on the floor of the boat, and she said she reached up and started the boat's engine and "shoved the outdrive into forward" to flee. She told deputies one of the projectiles "landed in the water next to the boat." They said they'd seen a yard full of geese and believed it was possible whoever fired the gun was trying to scare the geese away. Deputies located a homeowner who admitted firing his gun "recently," telling them he feeds birds and "sometimes he gets rats from the lake in his yard as well." He said he took his rifle out to shoot at the rats, thinking he was OK to do so. He said he didn't think he was doing anything wrong but did admit he saw an African American family in the area around that time. The man was advised that while the county doesn't prohibit residents from firing their guns, they have to be able to do it safely and with all the houses, the lake and hiking trails around his home, that would be impossible.
Disturbance: Family members said an Island Creek township woman was drinking heavily and became confrontational when they wouldn't let her drive away, Thursday. Amber Lee Smith, 42, 736 Township Road 391, Toronto, was taken into custody on charges of domestic violence and disorderly conduct, deputies said. Witnesses said she had consumed "a significant amount of alcohol" and began fighting with family members, breaking a window in her vehicle and injuring one of her relatives. The family didn't want to file charges, but deputies took her into custody after she allegedly became confrontational while they were speaking with witnesses.
R-E-S-P-E-C-T: A young teen came home from school with what family members described as a "negative attitude," using foul language and arguing with them, at one point telling a grandparent to "go lay down and die," Wednesday. When another family member threatened to spank her, she began kicking the adult and called 9-1-1. The teen told deputies "go lay down and die" is her "go-to" phrase when she's upset. The teen did not have any apparent injuries, but one of her grandparents had several small cuts, some of them bleeding. Deputies filed a domestic violence charge against the girl and booked her into the juvenile detention center.
Alarming: Someone pounded on a door at Colonial Heights Trailer Park so hard Saturday it "almost popped open," deputies were told. The homeowner said he was in the living room when he heard two loud bangs on the front door that "shook the living room, it was so violent." Deputies pointed out it's the third such report over the past couple months.

The juvenile girl's mom said the other woman has been "continuously harassing" her and had "accused her of being associated with the KKK." The boy's mother said she'd been dealing with "racial statements" from the other woman since the fight and said before police arrived, the girl's mom had told her "she was going to get the KKK after her.." Police told them to stay away from each other.

He refused to go to the hospital, but police recognized him from a similar call in July when he hadn't given police his name. The record was updated and he was issued his second drug treatment form.
