NEW MANCHESTER --The Oak Glen softball team held off visiting Wheeling Park for a big win at home, 5-4.
The Golden Bears opened a 5-1 lead through five before a sixth-inning Patriots rally narrowed the margin.
After scoring first in the bottom of the first with an Addie Smith RBI knock, the Bears (6-2) broke a 1-1 tie with two runs each in the third and fourth.
Kayla Wright doubled in two in the third, then, in the fourth, Riley Bruce drove in two with an RBI single.
Mattie Carney was the winning pitcher for Oak Glen, fanning five. She also had a three-hit day at the plate. Maddie Murray stuck out one in two innings of relief.
Edison tops EL
RICHMOND -- The Edison softball team had a big day with the bats to top visiting East Liverpool 14-0 in five innings on Thursday.
The Wildcats, 2-1, jumped ahead with three runs in the bottom of the first and did not look back, plating six in the second to take complete control.
Abigail Boka had two hits and two RBIs, while Sophia Henderson had a double and a triple and plated a run.
Mylie Powley struck out five in three relief innings, while Rebecka Evans got the start and the win.
Big Red splits a DH
DOVER--The Big Red softball team split a doubleheader on the road at Dover on Thursday, winning the first game 6-0 and falling a run shy of the sweep in the nightcap, 2-1.
In Game 1, Sena Smith was 3 for 4 at the plate with a pair of RBIs, while Sadie Edwards doubled and drove in two runs and Gia Bowman tripled. Sophia Zorne and Sagan Smarrella each plated a run as well.
Edwards got the win in the circle, firing a complete game three-hit shutout with six strikeouts.
In the second game, each team scored in their half of the first, then the Tornadoes plated the go-ahead run in the bottom of the second and held on the rest of the way.
Edwards had Big Red's lone RBI, while Smith and Emily Tuttle singled.
Katie Renforth took the loss in the circle, fanning two in three innings, while Smith went the final three and struck out four.
Madonna pulls away
PADEN CITY--The Madonna softball team got off to a fast start and made quick work of Paden City for a win on the road Thursday, 17-1.
The now 6-2 Blue Dons plated five in the top of the first and nine more in the second to pull away from the start.
Four players had multiple hits for the Dons. Ella Wingett tallied two hits and two RBIs, Carmela Pulice singled three times and drove in a pair of runs, as did Ally Laughlin, and Kendal Ryan had a pair of knocks and drove in a run. Kaleigh Gamble also drove in two runs.
Ryan earned her sixth win of the season in the circle, striking out two.
Toronto tops Buckeye
CONNORVILLE -- The Toronto softball team fended off Buckeye Local on the road Thursday for a 7-4 victory, improving to 3-0.
The Panthers, now 1-2, rallied with three in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough.
JJ Rebich and Isebell Cattrell each plated runs for the Red Knights, who plated three in the top of the first and led 7-1 at one point, while Andrea Reeves struck out nine in the circle.
For the Panthers, Kiera Eastham had a double and a single and Sam Ankrom drove in a run. Ankrom struck out four in the circle.
BASEBALL
Madonna wins big
BEALLSVILLE -- The Madonna baseball team won for the seventh time in eight outings by taking a five inning mercy rule win, 12-0, on the road at Beallsville on Thursday.
"The boys played well," Madonna coach TJ Miller said. "We hit the ball well and both pitchers did a great job on the hill. We're still working on approaches at the plate, but we'll get there."
The Blue Dons got three hits, including a homer, and four RBIs from Grant Wilharm, while Matt Geer had three hits, including a double, and plated three runs and TJ Decapio batted in two runs with three hits, also including a double.
Jacob Lazear struck out seven in three innings on the mound, Reed Wilharm fanned four in two relief innings.

Oak Glen sweeps JM
CHESTER--The Oak Glen girls tennis team swept to a 7-0 victory over John Marshall at Chester City Park on Thursday.
The Golden Bears got individual wins from Gabi Pasco, Elle Monaco, Leah McMahon and Kaylex Gibson, while winning all three doubles matches.
