Tacky talk: A caller complained of a disturbance at an 8-and-under softball game at North End ballfield, Friday. The couple causing the problem said they were "involved in a verbal disagreement," but police said they were "name-calling and using foul language." They were advised to stop.
They did anyway: A man who insisted to police he wasn't going to jail ended up there, anyway, Saturday. Police said Alex L. Slocum, 42, no fixed address, was known to have a warrant when he was spotted walking downtown. They allege Slocum attempted to walk away several times and said they "(were) not arresting him," but he was booked into the jail on the domestic violence warrant as well as resisting arrest.
Added up: A city resident is facing multiple charges after he allegedly tried to get away from police attempting to serve a warrant, Saturday. Robert Weaver, 38, no fixed address, was booked into the Jefferson County Jail on charges of possessing drugs, possessing drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest and tampering with evidence, in addition to his warrant for failure to appear. Police reported seeing Weaver grab a white substance from a small bag in his pocket and pop it in his mouth and claimed he actively resisted efforts to get him to spit it out. A crack pipe, a used hypodermic needle and a bag containing a white rock-like substance believed to be crack were allegedly found in his possession.
Interrupted: Individuals in a black pickup truck were seen in the vicinity of state Route 7 and Lincoln Avenue trying to pull scrap up the hill from the old Wheeling-Pitt property, Friday. Police said the would-be thieves were gone but they left an electric winch with cables and straps behind that was hooked up to six cut 60-foot pieces of rubber-encased copper power lines, so it was clear "a theft had been attempted." Police logged the winch and straps into evidence.
Charged: Employees at Kroger stopped a man from walking away without paying for food and hygiene products stashed in his backpack, Friday. Police said Patrick T. Swesey, 34 142 N. Police said the merchandise was valued at just over $109.
Tag team: Rural King employees told police a woman walked out of the store with $233 in clothing concealed in her bag and on her, Friday. They said a man riding in a motorized cart ran interference, asking an employee questions to assist the woman who was stealing things.
Pushy: A man in the 200 block of North Fourth Street said a woman wearing a flannel shirt and carrying several bags threatened him and stole $20 from him, Saturday. He said she'd gone into a store but when officers checked there was no one matching the description he'd given. When police asked him how she'd stolen money from him he claimed he was standing outside his vehicle when she "walked up to him, threatened him, reached into his pocket and took out his wallet."
Should have listened: Richard Goodman, 44, 815 N. Sixth St., Apt. 812, Steubenville, driving under suspension. Police said Goodman had been reminded after an earlier interaction that he was not to be driving, but immediately after police left was caught on camera getting in the car and driving away. His license plate was seized and the vehicle towed.
Damaged: An Oak Grove Avenue resident told police her rear window was broken, Saturday. She said some neighborhood kids told her a bird was responsible, but others said it was a ball that hit her car. She said she didn't want to file a complaint, but she did need to have a report on file for insurance.
Noisy: Neighbors complained about a loud radio in the 900 block of McKinley Avenue, Friday. Police said they heard it themselves and asked individuals in the residence to turn it down, which they did.
Animal control: Callers complained of a dark barking in the 800 block of North Sixth Street, Friday. Police spoke to the owner, who told them "she doesn't know how to keep the dog from barking." The officer offered several suggestions and told her if it continues she could be cited.
Problematic: A city resident said a family member was causing problems and threw his phone against a door, Saturday. She told police she evicted him but didn't have the paperwork because he'd ripped it up. He had left the residence by the time police arrived, but later in the day police had to go back to the house because he'd returned, this time breaking his computer. They were able to locate his car parked near another family member's home and spoke with him. He was advised to stay away from the woman's house.
Disruption: A woman in the 400 block of South Fifth Street told police a man was pounding on her door, refusing to leave, Friday. When they arrived, police were directed to an adjacent lot where they found a couple arguing about their relationship. The two of them were told to separate.
Near miss: A Kendall Avenue resident said someone tried to get into her house while she was away for a few hours, Saturday. She said she returned home to find her key wouldn't work and saw the handle and lock were damaged, but it didn't appear that entry was made.
