NEW CUMBERLAND -- The Hancock County Board of Education took time, Monday, to recognize the county's medal winners in the state SkillsUSA competition.
"SkillsUSA is a great program," noted Superintendent Dan Enich, who explained Hancock County has, for years, had students competing at both the state and national level.
This year's state contest was held in Fairmont, with the national competition - known as the SkillsUSA Championships - set for Atlanta in June.
The SkillsUSA Championships event is held annually for students in middle school, high school or college/postsecondary programs as part of the SkillsUSA National Leadership & Skills Conference. The national, nonprofit partnership of students, instructors and industry is a verified talent pipeline for America's skilled workforce that is working to help solve the skills gap.
"Many are skills we have at the JDR Center," Enich said.
Those medal recipients recognized Monday include:
Bronze: Megan Gaston in Job Skills Demonstration; Daniel Robinson in Advertising Design; and the team of Maria Stefansky, Riley Straight and Kylie Dunmyer for Chapter Display
Silver: Alexis Rhodes for Health Occupations Portfolio, Jack Crago for Welding Showcase and Gage Groetzinger for Carpentry Showcase
Gold: Aubrey Stoica for CPR/First Aid, Juliaunna Campbell for Nurse Assistant, Natalia Vella for Photography Showcase, and Dawson Evans for Action Skills.
Officials explained five of the students have qualified to take part in the national competition.
Also, Monday, the board recognized the qualifiers from Weir High School for the National Academic Games: Andrew Manteau, Hunter Antol and Max Wood.
