Harry C. Jeans, 78, of Wilmington, NC passed away October 22, 2014, at the Wilmington N.C. Cape Fear Hospice.
He was born August 23, 1936, in Wellsburg, WV, the son of the late Eugene C, and Elma M. (Cook) Jeans.
Harry is survived by his wife, Janie (Bailey) Jeans of Wilmington, NC; son, Gordon (Mary) Jeans of Apex, NC; daughter, Sharon (Terry) Southard of Franklinton, NC; daughter, Gail (James) Stephens of Cary, NC; son, Daniel (Rachel) Jeans of Wilson, NC; son, David (Lisa) Jeans of Loudonville, NY; step- sons, Bert (Amy) Walden and Brent Walden of Wilmington, NC; sister, Emma (James) McClain of Toronto, OH; sister, Shirley (Ronald) Riggleman of Toronto, OH; brother, Rev. Fredric E. (Delores) Jeans of Avon Park, FL; 12 grandchildren, four great-grand children, and 16 nieces and nephews also survive. He was a 1954 graduate of Toronto High School; served his country in the U.S. Air Force 1954 to 1958; received BS degree in mathematics from Kent State University and his MS degree in mathematics from the Fairfield University in Connecticut; taught junior high math for three years at the Grant Elementary School in Steubenville, OH; taught senior high math for five years at the Greenwich High School in Greenwich, CT; employed 25 years with IBM in Poughkeepsie, NY, and Raleigh, NC.
Harry was active in barbershop quartets for 20 years having competed in state and national venues in quartet and chorus; served in the meals program for the homeless and was a faithful member of the church choir. He and his wife, Janie, volunteered and served in the Military Wives Day Out Child Care Program for nearby military bases as an outreach program from their church.
A memorial service was held at the Ogden Baptist Church in Wilmington, NC, Saturday, October 25, 2014. Memorials in memory of Harry may be made to the Ogden Baptist Church, 7121 Market St., Wilmington, NC 28411.
