Maintenance progressing on fire hydrants

By CRAIG HOWELL 2 min read

WEIRTON -- In recent months, the Weirton Area Water Board has been working on maintenance projects for the city's water hydrant system.

The project was discussed Thursday during the board's regular monthly meeting, where officials provided an update on the efforts to check over the hydrants and provide each with a fresh coat of paint.

"All but 96 were painted this season," Utilities Director Butch Mastrantoni said. "Pretty much everywhere you drive now, you're seeing painted hydrants."

The city of Weirton has approximately 680 hydrants tied into its water distribution system.

Mastrantoni said the work has been performed by two summer employees, which he described as hard-working and dedicated.

"We've appreciated having them on our staff," Mastrantoni said, adding he is hoping to convince the individuals to remain with the department on weekend shifts, working around their college class schedule.

If the remaining hydrants are not addressed in the coming weeks, Mastrantoni reported they will most likely wait for next summer.

In other business, Jonathan Carpenter of the Thrasher Group reported discussions continue on inventory and replacement issues related to the board's new radio-read meter system.

"The plan is to have some resolution before your next meeting," Carpenter said.
