The City of Weirton is working to put the finishing touches on its updated Unified Development Ordinance.
The ordinance, which is expected to be officially made law in a few months, will serve as the zoning and planning codes for the city for the foreseeable future, guiding every bit of development for the community.
City council held a workshop last week to receive an update, suggesting a few revisions to the document. Eventually, it will go before council again for a formal vote.
In the meantime, there also will be opportunities for the public to weigh in. The development of this new UDO, which will replace the current guidelines, has been an ongoing project for the last couple of years. It has involved meetings with the community, surveys and more, and requires more public input.
The Weirton Planning Commission must hold a public hearing, receiving comments from residents and businesses. There also will be opportunities to comment prior to council taking its votes.
The UDO is well over 100 pages of regulations, definitions, drawings and maps. It can be difficult to understand, but it also is necessary to have some sort of zoning code for the city. If it's not there, you end up with slipshod development; no organization resulting in the city appearing to be just thrown together.
That's why we encourage the community to learn more about what is included, and, if you have questions or concerns, let the city know. This is a chance for everyone to have input in the future of Weirton.
