WVU football moves 2027 Ohio game up to season-opener

MORGANTOWN — West Virginia football changed the date of the home matchup against Ohio, which moved up the start of the 2027 season. The Mountaineers' game against the Bobcats will be played on Aug. 28, 2027, instead of the originally slated Sept. 18, 2027, game, per release. It'll now be the home and season-opener for the 2027 season. The season was supposed to start the following week against Southern Mississippi on Sept. 4. Pirates rookie Valdez leaves game with hand injury

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Pirates rookie outfielder Esmeryln Valdez was removed from Monday night's game against Arizona after being hit in the left hand by a pitch. Valdez, who has 14 homers in limited playing time this season, took a 92 mph fastball from Diamondbacks right-hander Merrill Kelly that smacked into the area around his left wrist. NEW YORK (AP) — Pitchers Logan Schmidt and Aidan Knaak were the only two players among those picked in the first 10 rounds of baseball's amateur draft who didn't sign by Monday's deadline to agree to deals. Schmidt, an 18-year-old left-hander from Ganesha High School in California, was selected 59th overall by Cleveland on the second round, and is likely to attend LSU or a junior college.
