Toronto police

Charged: Wesley M. Mitchell, 23, 305 Henrietta St., Weirton, expired registration; Kenneth A. Lowe, 51, Hazelwood, Pa., driving while suspended, public intoxication, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia and open container; Mark C. Dougherty, 37, 141 Saline St., Irondale, driving under the influence, possession of a controlled substance and open container; and Albert DiPietro, 60, 3212 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville, public intoxication.

Jefferson County sheriff

In custody: An Amsterdam man was taken into custody after allegedly assaulting a woman with what she described as a "sword" Wednesday. Michael Lee Lanham, 22, 266 township Road 307, was charged with felonious assault. The female had blood on her cheek and around her mouth "and a large amount of swelling to the left side of her face," deputies said. She told them she and Lanham were talking but he became "annoying" so she asked him to shut up, which upset him. The woman said she told him he could "stop talking or he could just get out," so he reached over her couch, grabbed a red backpack and a sword and as he grabbed the knife she said he swung it and it cut her. She told deputies all she could feel was a lot of "burning" around her face and when she saw blood, she ran to a neighbor's house to call for help. When they located Lanham, he claimed they'd argued over a flashlight that "(she) said no longer works after (he) had just fixed it" and when he stood up to walk away, she grabbed his shoulder so he couldn't leave. He said he pushed her off him and she tripped and fell near the chair. He told deputies "he believed she hit her face on a milk crate as she fell." Asked where his knife was, he told deputies he'd "put it up and stored it away" earlier in the night "to prevent something like this from happening," but he couldn't remember where he put it.

Cruel: A Toronto native who returned home after his mother's death discovered someone had stolen her jewelry, Tuesday. He said when the family was going through her things, he found empty jewelry boxes with notes describing the piece that was inside and who had gifted it to her and the occasion. At least one piece was discovered in a Steubenville pawn shop.

Trashy: John Dibacco, 59, 707 Market St., Steubenville, littering, Deputy said he traveling behind a vehicle Dibacco was riding in when he saw him throw a bottle into Cross Creek.

Low: Christopher Wood, 28, 208 Mellwood Drive, Toronto, was charged with two felony counts theft of a firearm and one count theft of cash and personal property with an elderly specification, Tuesday. Wood allegedly pilfered more than $3,000 in cash along with other items he pawned from a family member's home to buy alcohol and gamble.

Alternate entry: Someone tried to break into a home in Mount Pleasant, Tuesday. The owner discovered a side window open, burn marks on her patio cushions and pry marks on the front door frame.

Squatter's rights: A man in Rayland allegedly threatened harm to another man if he told anyone he was squatting on village property, Tuesday.

Vandalized: Two vehicles parked on a gravel lot on Kingsdale Road, Island Creek township, were broken into, Monday. Deputies said both appeared to have been ransacked.

Booked: Nicholas Oates, 28, 516 township Road 456, Irondale, failure to appear, Tuesday.

Steubenville police

Feet first: Two people were taken into custody after they allegedly tried to steal boots at Rural King, Monday. Dillon James O'Rourke, 31, and his fiance, Briana Huchko, 25 , both of McDonald, Pa., each were charged with petit theft. Police said O'Rourke told them he was only wearing the boots inside the store to determine whether he wanted to buy them. Huchko allegedly said she'd walked out to the car to get O'Rourke's wallet and decided to take her shoes off and walk back in the store barefoot so she could try on a pair of boots herself and wear them around the store. She told police she'd left Huchko's shoes in the car, but police said by then employees had found his shoes in a boot box that had been put back on the shelf.

Helping hands: A Mingo Junction woman said a female she'd met a couple days ago and had been helping out stole her wallet, Tuesday. She said they'd been at the Spot Bar, and after they left she let the woman get her things out of the car and didn't realize her wallet was missing was missing from the center console until after the woman had left the area. It held $100 in cash and several debit cards, she said.

No smoking: A Park Street resident was taken into custody after she allegedly assaulted an employee and knocked over a drink cooler because she was told she couldn't smoke inside a Maxwell Avenue store. Vanessa Soliz, 37, 1320 Park St., was charged with assault, criminal mischief and resisting arrest after she reportedly hit the clerk in the face, then threw several punches to the woman's head and neck area before shoving her into a drink machine. Police said when a customer intervened, Soliz allegedly began screaming obscenities and then kicked the drink cooler, which fell over and spilled its contents on the floor. Police say the incident was documented on the store surveillance footage, though Soliz "denied any physical involvement." Soliz screamed obscenities and actively resisted arrest, officers noted.
