Police reports

Jefferson County Sheriff

Street walker: Mingo Junction firefighters were concerned about a man trying to flag down cars in front of their station, asking drivers for a ride to Steubenville, Wednesday. The man showed no signs of impairment, so deputies told him he needed to “leave the scene and stay out of the street.”

False alarm: A woman staying at a Wintersville residence told 911 dispatchers the homeowner was dumping gasoline all over the house and making explosives in the basement, Monday. The homeowner had no problem with authorities checking his home for explosives or spilled gasoline, and told them he took some gas outside to clean his tractor so the smell was strong in the garage. Deputies said when they opened the door to the garage, the odor traveled through the house and suspected that was what the woman smelled. The homeowner said his houseguest was “a troubled girl who was having some problems where she was living in Cleveland and when he was up there (recently) he offered her a room in his house to get away from things,” deputies reported. He said the woman had been acting strange from time-to-time, and deputies said there was no indication the homeowner “had dumped any gasoline in the house and nothing in the basement looked like bomb materials.” When they talked with the woman, she told deputies the homeowner was the reason she’s had trouble with her life for the past five-plus years but they said she couldn’t explain why she came with him if that was the case. She said she had to “gain information” on “how he was controlling her life.” She declined to go to the hospital or the women’s shelter to get out of the house. The homeowner said he was going to help her get back to Cleveland.

Light it up: An Island Creek township resident told deputies her neighbor has installed “giant lights on her house” that are causing problems for motorists and making it difficult for her to pull out of her own driveway, Wednesday. She said she thinks the lights are also causing her chickens to lay fewer eggs and may have killed some of them, because chickens need night and day cycles to function. She said the lights only shine on her property and are meant to annoy her, and the neighbor’s motion-activated cameras pointing at her property have her pre-teen daughter afraid to go outside to play. It’s an ongoing issue between the two women. Deputies said in the past, the neighbor has accused the woman of posting vulgar signs and lights shining onto her property. Deputies said there also has been an ongoing dispute between families since 2014 over property.

Steubenville Police

Charged: A city resident was booked into the county jail on drug charges after police were asked to do a welfare check because callers had reported seeing her slumped over the wheel, Thursday. Police said Cathy Poole, 34, 1311 Oregon Ave., Steubenville, was charged with two counts of drug possession and possession of drug paraphernalia. They allege Poole took “an unusual amount of time” to exit the vehicle when they stirred her, and when she got out managed to drop her phone on the ground, “with white powder on the screen along with a small straw with white powder residue.” Police also allege they found more of the white powder residue and a white rock in a bag on the floor of the car as well as more of what they described as snort straws. She told police she didn’t have any other illicit substances, but at the county jail correctional officers allegedly found 0.7 grams of cocaine on Poole’s person as well as a bottle filled with Clonazepam and white powder “hidden inside” her. The white powder is believed to be crack cocaine base, police said.

Puzzle pieces: A Sherman Avenue resident told police her neighbor was pounding on their shared wall and threatened to assault her, Thursday. As they were leaving the neighbor asked to speak with them and told police she was the one being harassed, and said the woman who’d called them had been calling her names and threatening to fight her. They were advised to stay away from each other and stop instigating fights.

Neighborhood wars: A Sunset Boulevard resident told police she’s being harassed by a woman who thinks she was responsible for a text message that upset her, Thursday. She said the woman jumped her last week when she was at a store, but she didn’t report it at the time because she wasn’t interested in pursuing it. But since then, she said the woman has been threatening her on social media. She said the woman’s mother is also harassing her mother. She denied sending any texts to the woman.

Bothersome: A woman on Murphy Street told police she’s being harassed by another woman, Tuesday. She said the other woman was “weaving in and out of traffic harassing her” on Sunset Boulevard and claimed she’d also followed her to Walmart. She said they’re due in court and she just wanted the information on record.

Lost: A Clinton street resident who lost her wallet several days ago said she’s noticed a charge on it from a downtown gas station, Thursday.

Overt: A pedestrian reported being threatened by a man driving a white Ford Fusion, Tuesday. He said the man screamed obscenities at him during their first encounter, and later in the evening yelled at him again that he was “gonna stab (him),” Tuesday.

Bad move: A city resident told police she saw her son steal her EBT card, Tuesday. She said she wants to pursue charges.
