Police reports

Steubenville Police

Pushy: A man caused a disturbance at Finley Methodist Church because he wanted money and congregants would only give him food, Sunday. Police told him to leave the property and not return.

Lucky find: Police responding to an alarm in the 1400 block of Euclid Avenue said there was no smoke, Sunday. They said it was apparent the property had been empty for some time, but they could hear the alarm and while they were searching for open doors said they smelled natural gas coming from the residence. Steubenville firefighters were called to the scene and shut the gas off.

In custody: A woman who allegedly fled JC Penney with items she hadn’t paid for was taken into custody after she crashed her Subaru into a fence, Sunday. Police said Jessica L. O’Neill, 37, 917 N. Fifth St., Steubenville, was charged with theft, fleeing and eluding, hit/skip and driving under suspension. They said they found O’Neill’s unoccupied vehicle crashed into the fence between Langley Avenue and Union Cemetery, but found her walking on McCauslen Manor.

Broken: An Arlington Avenue resident said the glass on her front door was shattered, Sunday. She said there wasn’t anything on the porch that could have caused the damage.

Problem drinking: A Mingo Junction man reported a dispute with his wife and her sister, but couldn’t tell deputies any details other than he had “consumed alcohol,” Sunday. He told deputies he “drank a little,” but his wife said she came home from the store to find him intoxicated. She said she tried to avoid a fight by walking away but he followed her wherever she went, and eventually “had grown so angry that he asked (her) to leave the home,” so she called her sister for a ride. She said her sister heard him “making horrible comments” to her. She couldn’t remember what the fight was about, either, but said he “drinks to get drunk every evening, usually resulting in unnecessary disputes over silly things” and told deputies she wishes he’d get help. She said whenever he gets drunk and they argue he makes her leave the house, so she complied. Deputies advised the couple to “communicate with each other in a healthy manner to avoid any further disputes.”

Short fuse: A Rayland man said a family member threatened to shoot him when he heard him arguing with a female in the house, Friday. The female said the two of them were arguing about a new recliner that had been delivered and said her husband “became upset for some reason and started an argument due to no longer wanting (it).” The argument drew the attention of another individual in the house who tried to intercede on her behalf, but her husband got in his face and began arguing with him as well and urged the younger male to hit him. The younger man refused, but told the caller he’d “defend himself” if he were to start anything. Both the female and the younger male insisted the disagreement was strictly verbal, and both said there was no mention of a gun. The original caller insisted he’d been threatened with a firearm. Since he’d already left the house, deputies advised him to stay away from the residence for a few days.

In custody: A Steubenville man was taken into custody after he allegedly was seen forcing a female and her child into his car and threatening to harm others at the location, Saturday. James Roe, 40, no fixed address, has been charged with felony domestic violence, deputies said. Roe is also facing a separate misdemeanor domestic violence and breaking-and-entering stemming from a Feb. 5 incident, they said. On that occasion, Roe allegedly maced the female without warning.
