Alcoholic haze: Callers reported a man was laying on the sidewalk by the bus terminal at Adams and Fifth Street, Tuesday. The man told police he gave his bank card to a man named "Nick" so he could get some things for him, but the man returned to tell him he'd dropped it down a storm drain so he was checking drains for his card. Officers looked in several drains for him and came up empty, then broke the news to him that he should probably contact his bank to close the account because "this male possibly lied to him and still has (it)." Early Wednesday, police were sent to check on him after someone requested a welfare check. Police said he was sitting on a bench by the bus terminal, drinking a beer and advised police he didn't call them. He said he didn't need medical attention, so police cited him for having an open container and dumped his beer. Several hours later he asked dispatchers to send an ambulance to take him to the hospital.
Big bucks: A man told police he was robbed at an apartment in the 100 block of North Fourth Street where he was "hanging out" with people he didn't know, Tuesday. He said a man wearing a bandanna, white T-shirt and shorts punched him in the nose, then got in his back pocket and stole "two forty dollar bills." The tenant told police she didn't know the man and nothing had happened in her apartment and the man who was there didn't match the description he'd given. They talked to the caller again and he insisted he knew the woman and had her cell number, but called her by a different name and refused to call her when police asked him to. The man said he didn't need an ambulance and police said he didn't have "any obvious sign of injury."
Role models: A motorist on Wilshire Boulevard said a white SUV occupied by two white women and children was parked near the stop sign at the top of the hill so he went around them, then they followed him home "yelling and cursing," Tuesday.
Potty mouth: A man named "Lawrence" was standing in front of the Friendship Room yelling obscenities, Tuesday. Police were told the staff has had ongoing problems with the man harassing them and others in the area.
Hit-skip: A Princeton Avenue man said a neighbor called him to let him know his car had been hit, Tuesday. He said he returned home to find it had been rear-ended and was pushed partway into his yard. The other driver left tire marks in his grass.
Rocky road: A caller reported juveniles throwing rocks at an apartment building in the 900 block of North Sixth Street, Tuesday. Police said there were rocks scattered all over the yard and in front of the building.
Bargain hunter: Employees reported a shoplifter allegedly tried to leave Walmart with nearly $430 in food and merchandise he hadn't paid for, Tuesday. They said the man left the cart outside the store and fled.
Booked: Employees at Walmart claim a man scanned a 53-cent purchase then "attempted to walk out of the store with a chain saw" as if he had paid for it, Tuesday. Police said they reviewed security footage before taking Jeremy X. Rood, 22, 525 Canton Road, into custody for misdemeanor theft. The saw was valued at just under $150.
Invisible man: Someone reported a man on the ground in front of the fire station in the 1500 block of University Boulevard, Wednesday. Police checked the area but didn't locate anyone in distress.
Problematic: A man was causing a disturbance in the 400 block of South Sixth Street, but when police arrived the caller told police he'd left, Tuesday.
Vicious circle: A Ross Street resident wanted a woman to leave her property, Tuesday. The woman was still on the property when police arrived and told them she wanted "her missing money and cell phone," but left the property when police told her to. The resident said the woman "was banging on her door and would not leave" and denied taking her money or cell phone.
Fraud: A Lawson Avenue resident told police someone used her information to open an account at T-Mobile in Florida, Tuesday.
Code issues: Notices of violation were sent to owners/occupants of properties at 409 Union Ave., high weeds/grass and trash, garbage and old furniture behind residence; 1407 Ridge Ave., garbage piled in rear; 1647 Oregon Ave., tires scattered in front yard, household trash on porch and high weeds/grass. Also, 1139 Oak Grove and 1525 Oregon Ave., both for high weeds/grass.
