Dumb move: A passerby reported seeing six or seven men at a railroad crossing on county Road 74 in a car arguing before two of them exited it and jumped on a moving train headed toward Mingo Junction. The driver took off down the tracks chasing the train, then turned around and went back to county Road 74.
On a mission: A Wintersville resident told deputies a woman who had been drinking with her stole her car, Dec. 21. She said she caught the woman going through her purse looking for her car keys and eventually snatched them out of her hands. She said the woman was intoxicated and "wanting to buy drugs" and thought she might have gone to Steubenville, but village police found the vehicle parked on Two Ridge Road near North Byron Drive. Deputies helped the owner retrieve her car.
Brazen: Someone tried to break into a residence on county Road 45, Sunday. The homeowner said he was sitting in his kitchen when they rang his doorbell and he chose not to answer it. He said he heard glass breaking a couple of minutes later "and assumed it was the (individuals) who rang his doorbell" trying to break in through his basement door so he activated his panic alarm. Deputies found the broken glass by his basement door.
Backfired: A Mingo Junction resident said he came home from work and found his basement door open and his home ransacked, Saturday. Deputies said entry was made through a hole made with an axe. He said the thief ignored gaming items, TVs, speakers and jewelry and just stole his safe, which had only some paperwork in it.
Interrupted: A Richmond resident said someone tried to break into his home, Sunday. He told deputies he was in bed asleep when he heard someone trying to break in and said when he turned the lights on the would-be thieves fled in an SUV.
Steubenville Police
Light-fingered: A man stole a gun from a shop in the 4400 block of Sunset Boulevard, Wednesday. The owners said the man wandered through the store "browsing for something" and eventually told them he was going to his car to get his wallet. When he re-entered the store he paid cash for an item and left, and minutes later they realized a complete lower gun receiver, also referred to as a lower parts kit, had been stolen. It was valued at $260.
No details: A Ridge Avenue resident called 911 to find out why police "had not arrested her neighbor and other 'gang members' for trespassing on her property," but could not provide details of a specific incident "and only referenced officers patrolling the area," Wednesday. Dispatchers told her they could not provide answers without information. Police were dispatched to the location again nearly two hours later for a hangup call and said the residence was vacant, but they were approached by a female who advised she'd been calling 911 to "advise them of drug and gang activity in the area."
Booted: A man in the 100 block of North Fifth Street asked police to remove a woman from his apartment, Wednesday. They stood by as she gathered her personal belongings from the residence and then escorted her to the sidewalk outside the complex, then had to return about 90 minutes later after receiving several calls from the woman, who they said was "highly intoxicated (and) said she needed a ride home." Police said she was unsteady on her feet and smelled of alcohol, so when they dropped her off in the vicinity of Carnegie Street and Wellesley Avenue they advised her to call it a night.
Dirty business: A Buena Vista Boulevard resident told police a fight with her boyfriend was strictly verbal, even though she had "a large amount of potting soil" all over her back, Thursday. She eventually told police he was upset because the house wasn't clean and dumped the dirt on her, but became "defensive and uncooperative" with police and said she wasn't interested in pursuing charges. The boyfriend admitted he was upset that the house was dirty "and threw some items in the process."
Shoplifting arrest: Wal-Mart employees told police they stopped a woman who tried to leave the store with merchandise she hadn't paid for, Wednesday. They said they watched the woman walking into the restroom carrying a cell phone charging cable and a wall charging port and said when she came out she was empty handed, and employees said after finding the torn and empty packaging in the bathroom they stopped her at the exit. The woman denied wrongdoing, telling police she "purchased the exact items on Christmas Eve night, and had the charging cable in her pocket, but they reported finding the charger and the charging port in her pocket along with her ID, which she'd also denied having with her. Patricia Frazier, 34, 600 N. Fifth St., Steubenville, was charged with petit theft.
Witness intimidation: A city resident reported being threatened by family and friends of a man who assaulted her, Wednesday. She said she was fearful he "would have someone cause her additional harm."
Assault reported: A city resident carrying a large piece of wood told police he'd been assaulted with it on Maxwell Avenue, Wednesday. He said he was hit in the back of the head and on his mouth, but police didn't see any visible injuries. Police said he was "highly upset" and they had difficulty understanding him so they followed him to his vehicle, where he then told them three men who were standing nearby "stole his car keys" but they said they said there had been no interaction with him until he "began creating a disturbance." He eventually calmed down and left the area on foot.
Too loud: Police were called to the 1300 block of Euclid Avenue because of a loud radio, and when they got there the homeowner said his neighbor had been "harassing him by calling the police several times a day ... for the radio." Police said when they arrived they didn't hear any music coming from his residence, but they came back a short time later and "could hear the radio several houses up" from his home. They spoke with the man again, telling him to keep the noise down. He complied.
Fraud: A Buena Vista Boulevard resident reported she discovered a fraudulent Capital One credit card application had been submitted in her name, Wednesday. She said she was checking her credit score when she learned of the fraud.
Say goodbye: A city resident said she and her boyfriend were arguing when it turned physical and he threatened her life, Tuesday. She said as he fled the residence he "threw a bicycle part through her window." The woman told police she wants to pursue charges.
Wakeup call: South Fifth Street residents said a man they know as "James" entered their apartment uninvited through the front door while they were sleeping, Tuesday. They said they were awakened by the intruder assaulting the male resident, punching him "at least 10 times in the face with a closed fist" while holding a knife in his other hand but he didn't use the knife in the assault. A neighbor saw the man fleeing the residence with the knife still in his hand and said the man "threatened to stab him" with it. The victims said James is from Canton.
Causing problems: A downtown resident and her male companion were causing a disturbance in the 300 block of North Seventh Street, Tuesday. Police said they were arguing, not for the first time, over a set of keys. Police gave the female a ride to her mother's residence.
Actions and reactions: A downtown resident claimed her father pushed her out of his Rosswell Boulevard residence and in the process left her ear red, Tuesday. Police said her father told them he threw her out after finding out she'd stolen from him.
Drugs: An unresponsive woman was reported in the 1000 block of Claire Avenue, Tuesday. Steubenville firefighters administered Narcan and by the time she arrived at the hospital police said she "became belligerent and refused to be seen," so doctors said she was "good to go to jail." Jiah Minnifield, 26, 624 N. Fourth St., Steubenville, was charged with possession of drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia after corrections officers allegedly found a glass pipe and chore boy in her possession, police said.
Drugs: An unresponsive man was reported in an alleyway in the 1400 block of Maryland Avenue, Tuesday. Police said when they arrived the man was breathing shallowly but would periodically awaken and start yelling, then lose consciousness again. Steubenville firefighters took him to the hospital for treatment.
Summoned: Patricia Hayes, 34, 301 N. Seventh St., Steubenville, disorderly conduct, Tuesday. Police said Hayes repeatedly called 911 requesting assistance, and when they located her, she told them "She was fine and did not need any medical attention." She refused treatment and walked away, but allegedly continued to call 911 and tell dispatchers she needed attention. Police said she was subsequently found walking in the middle of state Route 7, impeding traffic.
Shell game: A Henry Avenue resident said he'd deposited a$2,850 check into his account on Dec. 8 and found out later it was fraudulent, and it had been removed, Tuesday. He said he deposited a check for $1,168 into his account just before Christmas and "when he attempted to use his debit card, he discovered the money had been removed and he had a negative balance." He insisted someone had stolen his money.
