Steubenville Police

Lock it or risk losing it: Police are advising residents to lock their car doors after a spate of car thefts, particularly if those vehicles are Kias or Hyundais. Several car thefts have been reported in Steubenville in recent weeks and last week three juveniles from Pittsburgh–one of them with ties to Steubenville — were taken into custody after they allegedly were caught fleeing a stolen Kia.

Vehicles stolen from other communities have been recovered in Steubenville as well, including a silver Hyundai parked in front of a residence in the 1200 block of Arlington Avenue, Monday. A caller reported seeing a suspicious vehicle, and when police investigated they said the vehicle had two license plates–one of them from a white Ford that had been stolen. Thieves used duct tape to fasten it to the original license plate, which belonged to the stolen Hyundai. Police said the window had been shattered and the steering wheel column and ignition had been tampered with.

Prohibited left turn: Melvin R. Hayes, 52, 2765 state Route 646, Richmond, cited for a stop sign violation, driving under suspension and fictitious plates after he allegedly was seen making an illegal left hand turn from Bryden Road onto Sunset Boulevard, “almost causing an accident,” Monday. The vehicle was towed because Hayes was unable to provide a valid registration, police said.

Underage consumption charged: A driver who allegedly struck a parked car on Market Street at Court Alley ended up booked into the county jail on an intoxication hold, Monday. Makayla A. Roth, 19, 417 Lawson Ave., Steubenville, was charged with OVI and underage consumption after she allegedly was unable to perform standard field sobriety tests, police said. Witnesses reported Roth “simply traveled into” the parked vehicle, which police said was slightly damaged though hers suffered heavy front-end damage to the passenger side front wheel and noted the front tire had “nearly fallen off/broken off.” Police allege Roth’s speech was delayed and slurred, her eyes were “overly glossy” and her pupils “at pinpoint dilation” and that she told them she was “under the influence of THC.” They said a snort straw and a half-empty liquor bottle were in plain view in the vehicle, and when they searched it claim they found four more bottles of liquor, including one they said was only half full. They report Roth told them her ABS light came on and her brakes malfunctioned, but noted she was unable to follow directions for the field tests and appeared unsteady. Roth refused a blood-alcohol test at the jail and was taken to Trinity Medical Center West for evaluation, where she allegedly told medical personnel she was “under the influence of alcohol and THC,” police reported.

Booked: A downtown resident was served with a warrant out of Wintersville county court, Monday. Jonathan G. Williams, 35, 205 S. Fourth St., Apt. 2, Steubenville, was charged with manufacturing/forging ID cards, police said.

Concerned: A Steubenville woman reported a niece living with her due to an abusive husband had received a text from the man claiming “he was on their property,” Monday. They told police they think he turned off one of their outdoor lights. Police searched the property but said he wasn’t there.

Move out time: A Lincoln Boulevard resident wanted her now ex-boyfriend to move out, Monday. She said they argued but it didn’t become physical. The male said he would leave and gathered some of his things and was warned to call police before returning for the rest of him since she doesn’t want him there.

Drunk driving charged: Rudolphus Strawder, 55, 718 Oakmont Ave., Steubenville, was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence and operating a motor vehicle on a temporary permit, Monday. Police said they took Strawder into custody after he allegedly was seen driving at Fifth and Washington streets without his headlights on. Police claim he was unsteady, his speech slurred, he smelled of alcohol and that he admitted drinking two beers several hours earlier. Strawder was booked into the county jail on an eight-hour intoxication hold.

Bothered: Two people complained that a man was harassing them, Monday. The female said the man texted them that he was at Jim Wood Park. Her companion said the man wanted to fight him.

Throwing stones: A South Sixth Street resident said juveniles have been throwing rocks at her home, Monday. She said it’s been a problem for the past three years.

Not getting along: Police investigating a disturbance call said one of two residents at a property in the 1500 block of Maryland Avenue admitted they’d been arguing Monday. The woman said she was leaving the property.

Reported stolen: An Oregon Avenue resident said her car was stolen, Monday. She said they’d gone to pick up a friend at the airport and when they returned the vehicle was missing. She said both sets of keys were inside the house.

Booked: Jaquala Brown, 450 Arabella St., Pittsburgh, warrant for theft of a motor vehicle and a bench warrant, Sunday. Coraopolis Police took Brown into custody after confirming the warrants.
