Wonder why: A resident in the 1400 block of Ridge Avenue demanded to speak with a police officer because as she walked her kids to school she noticed a window on the side of her residence opened more than she had left it, Friday. The dispatcher explained to her they were all out on patrol and she would have to send one to the caller's house, but the woman said she wasn't home and she wanted her residence checked. The dispatcher said when she asked her to call when she was near her home so an officer could meet her "and she refused. She hung up on me." The woman called back and the dispatcher again tried to explain to her that police cannot enter her residence without her being present but she "became upset" and told the dispatcher she "was worthless and no one helps her."
Money grab: A Grandview Avenue resident said a family member had stolen a bag of quarters from her, then got a ride to Kroger and used them to purchase a VISA card, Friday. The bag contained more than $400 in quarters. The homeowner advised police she wants to pursue charges.
Paper trail: Steubenville firefighters had to crawl through a second-story window to rescue a man who had been "trapped under his bed due to a very large amount of newspapers and magazines that had fallen on top of him," Saturday. A neighbor had asked police to check on the man, reported he'd seen the man fall the day before and now couldn't reach him, "which is unusual." Police said there was a trail of dried blood drops from the garage to the front of the man's residence, but they were unable to get inside until firefighters arrived. He was freed from the debris and transported to the hospital.
Tacky man: A disturbance was reported at a North Sixth Street location, Saturday. Police said when they arrived they heard a female crying, and when questioned she told them she'd been arguing with her husband and he broke an urn belonging to her late daughter. She said he also threw a candle, which broke on the floor, but she didn't want to pursue charges.
Asking too much: A couple shopping at Rural King wanted police to enforce a protection order they had against a woman who works there, Saturday. Police told them they would ask managers to send the employee to the back of the store until the two of them finished shopping, but they weren't going to make her leave work.
Slithering in: A resident in the 2000 block of Eve Drive said a snake got inside her home, Friday. Police checked the residence and didn't find it. The owner "believes" it made its way back outside prior to the officer's arrival.
Booked: Camile Beane, 31, 450 Park Ave., Cadiz, failure to appear, probation violation and theft, Saturday. Police said the owner of a city business told them Beane was inside the store "acting erratically with the owner and a worker who had the door locked. They claimed Beane had been in the store earlier in the day and left with merchandise she hadn't paid for.
Pipe down: A man in the 900 block of McKinley was sitting on his front porch playing loud music out of a speaker, and when police told him the neighbors were unhappy he claimed they were "discriminating him and that's why they are calling." Police advised him they could hear the music coming from his property when they were on the road. He was given a copy of the noise ordinance and a warning.
Unhappy customer: A man who paid a car repair business $2,079 to fix his car said "as soon as he got (it) back it was having the same problems as it was prior to the repair," Friday. He said he returned to the shop and the mechanics could not diagnose the problem and he started arguing with the manager. He told police he wanted to press charges but the manager said he'd "made vague threats toward him" and wanted him off the property. The owner of the vehicle was advised to call the corporate office.
No thank you: A woman told police she was at the checkout counter at a downtown business paying for her items when another woman told her "she needed to say 'please' and 'thank you' to the workers," Friday. She said they started to argue and after she left called police, who said they spoke with the other woman and did not observe any signs of impairment. The two were separated.
Forget it: A man who'd rented a car forgot to grab his gun before he turned it in, Friday. Police took possession of the handgun and were able to locate the owner, who told them he'd misplaced it.
Bad houseguest: An Oregon Avenue couple said a man they let stay at their residence fled with an iPhone 11, a wireless charger and $300 he stole from their dresser, Friday.
Funny money: A couple purchased items at Wal-Mart with a debit card, then tried to make a second purchase with a counterfeit $100 bill, Friday. The checkout machine rejected the bill and it had to be removed by an employee, who cashed the couple out manually but kept the counterfeit money. The bill was turned over to police along with a video of the incident.
Kids play: A Clinton Street resident complained of "subjects yelling," Friday. Police said all they could find were kids outside playing tag. They were asked to "quiet down a bit."
Cited: Larry Graham, 62, 815 N. Sixth Ave., Apt. 413, intoxication/disorderly conduct, Friday. Police said Graham was walking in the 100 block of South Eighth Street when he stumbled "and nearly fell over in front of (the) cruiser, catching himself on the hood." Police said he was highly intoxicated and unable to maintain his balance, so he was taken to the hospital for treatment and issued a summons.
Gassed: Someone reported seeing a woman "lying in the roadway with a gas can on top of her" on the Veterans Bridge ramp, Saturday. Officers checked the area but said they couldn't find anyone.
Slow leak: A man parked in the 1600 block of Ridge Avenue said someone let the air out of his tires, Saturday. Police said they put the caps back on the tires, which appeared to be undamaged.
Booked: Dylan McElroy, no age listed, 255 S. Fifth St., Steubenville, probation violation, Sunday.
Grabbed: A display phone was stolen from the Cricket store at the Fort Steuben Mall, Friday. Store cameras caught the man stuffing it in his pocket and leaving the store. The phone was valued at $160.
Code violations: Notices of violation were sent to owners/occupants of properties at 121 Welday Ave., 144 Welday Ave., 2403 Cleveland Ave., 4097 Stratford Blvd., high grass/weeds. Also, 625 N. Fifth St., large pile of junk, litter and personal items.
Cited: Maria Elisa Madero de Gessler, 56, 208 Murdock St., Mingo Junction, speeding (school zone); Cole Mullins, 30, Uniontown, Pa., and Kaylee M. Durbin, 25, no address listed, both for expired/unlawful plates; Jose A. Soto, 51, 320 S. Fifth St., Steubenville, no operator's license.
