Ride shared: A Lincoln Avenue man told police a woman who’d asked him for a ride ended up stealing his car, Sunday. He said she’d asked him to pick her up at the laundromat, then convinced him to pick her nephew up, too, and take the two of them to Beatty Park. At the park he said she wanted to go for a walk with her, so they left her nephew in the car and headed out on foot. She eventually told him she needed to use the restroom and walked away. He said he stopped to tie his shoe and when she didn’t return right away, walked back to his car only to discover it and the two of them were gone. He said neither of them had permission to take his car and said he’d already told her no earlier in the day when she wanted to use it.

Prolific thief: Wal-Mart employees said a woman tried to leave the store with 72 items valued at $756 that she hadn’t paid for, Sunday. They said they’d watched the woman at the self-checkout skip scanning (scanning an item and bagging others that weren’t scanned), stacking (only scanning the bottom item in a stack of merchandise) and straight bagging (intentionally bagging items that hadn’t been scanned), then put the bagged items on top of other items that weren’t scanned. They said she appeared to play with her phone for several minutes before pushing the cart back into the store and handing it off to a teenager she’d brought with her. Employees said they tried to stop the woman but she “became verbally confrontational” and refused to be stopped, leaving the store with the loaded shopping cart as well as the juvenile and a toddler she’d brought with her. As she left they said the woman “shouted out a license plate number” which ended up matching the plates on the vehicle the three of them fled in. Employees told police she woman was in their database in connection with the theft of more than $500 in merchandise from their Calcutta store.
