Police reports

Steubenville Police

Terrified: A city resident told police his mother texted him that she had barricaded herself in her room at a residence in the 500 block of Logan Street “due to a male … inside allegedly trying to harm her,” Thursday. He said he knocked on the door and a man he didn’t know told him no one else was there. Police spoke with the strange man and said he was “highly irate and screaming” during their conversation, and when asked if the woman was there “pointed to the upstairs and stated there was a female in the residence that he did not know.” Police said he continued to scream and when they located her the woman was “visibly upset,” reporting he had also screamed obscenities and threatened to kill her while standing outside the door. She said she was in the kitchen when the man began acting aggressively toward her and started screaming. She said she lived in the residence with her boyfriend, the irate man’s cousin, but he wasn’t there. She gathered some things and left with her son.

Much ado about nothing: Two women in the 400 block of South Fifth Street complained about each other, Wednesday. The caller said a neighbor across the street “was harassing her and banging on her door” and claimed the woman called her a racist “and eventually called her out to fight.” She said the woman walked across the street and continued arguing with her. The across-the-street neighbor said the two of them had been arguing, threatening each other and calling each other names. She said she crossed the street to talk to another woman about the argument when the caller “exited her apartment with a knife and threatened to stab” her. Security footage showed the caller on her stoop with a silver object in her hand but said they couldn’t be sure what it was. Police said the two had continued to argue and it appeared that no one who was there believed anyone was going to be harmed. The woman who was threatened and her mother were unhappy no one was charged.

Squatters: A neighbor asked police to check a house that has been vacant for years which suddenly had a door open and a shopping cart left outside it, Wednesday. Police said the grass is “nearly 3 feet high” and there were pry marks on the door and door jam indicating forced entry. They said it didn’t appear there was water or electrical service to the residence, but there were “random belongings mostly in the downstairs area,” including food.

Heed the warnings: A vehicle previously marked for overtime parking in the vicinity of Longford Drive and Norton Place was towed from a work area, Wednesday. Police said the area had been posted no parking due to the paving project.

No parking: Someone complained about a vehicle being parked in the front yard of a residence in the 800 block of Rosswell Avenue, Wednesday. Police advised the owner of the violation and said she moved it to a legal parking space.

Causing problems: Police advised several vagrants they are no longer allowed to sit or sleep on the porch of the Urban Mission building at North and Fifth Streets, Wednesday. An individual who was blocking the sidewalk under the Sixth and Washington Street overpass also was told to leave, along with others who were found there.

Theft reported: An Adams Street resident told police she thinks someone entered her building through a back door and stole a pink sweater and a bag of clothes from her apartment, Wednesday. Police said they didn’t see any new damage to the door, though there was “very old damage” to the molding holding the plexiglass window in place.

Drugs: Someone reported seeing a man in the 100 block of North Fourth Street behaving suspiciously, and when police arrived they said he was lapsing in and out of consciousness, Wednesday. They were able to keep him alert long enough for Steubenville EMS to arrive and transport him to the hospital for treatment. He was issued a drug treatment form.

Recovered: Nebraska State Highway Patrol notified police a vehicle stolen from Steubenville had been recovered in that state, Wednesday.

Served: Earmon J. McCollins Jr., 67, 147 N. Sixth Ave., Steubenville, bench warrant, Wednesday.

Jefferson County Sheriff

Go time: A Mingo Junction woman said her live-in boyfriend came home from the casino and “threw stuff at her and (their) baby, then held a knife to his throat and threatened” to harm himself. She said he’s “constantly accusing her of cheating on him and screaming” obscenities and addressing her with derogatory terms in the presence of their 6-month-old child as well as another from a previous relationship. She said the boyfriend “sleeps in the basement and spends hours at the casino, leaving his phone in the car” and when she asked him if she could look through it “that started a big fight.” She said he pushed her around and admits she eventually “pushed him back and head-butted him,” so he slammed her on the ground and snatched the teething baby away from her and was “recklessly handling her.” She told police the fight was “mild” compared to some they’ve had and “seemed more interested” in getting some sleep than she was in having him charged. Deputies wanted her to go “somewhere safe” but report she grabbed a floor jack handle and said a family member was coming to stay with her. The boyfriend left the area when she called 911.

Claiming space: A Yorkville resident said a woman left a note on her car asking her not to park in a particular space, and when she continued to park there the note writer confronted her about parking in “her spot” and called her disrespectful, Tuesday. She was concerned the situation would escalate so deputies tracked the note writer down and explained to her “the spot she was claiming as hers was public parking and it was first-come, first-served” and if she wanted to park there, she would have to get there before anyone else.

Bruised ego: Deputies said a man asked them to do a welfare check on two young children in Dillonvale, claiming their mother was high and unfit, Monday. The woman said the caller was most likely her ex boyfriend who was upset that she broke up with him after an hours-long argument over “multiple unknown men attempting to contact her through social media.” She said he wouldn’t let her go to bed and, because of how he was behaving in front of her children, she’d asked a family member to pick them up. Deputies said she showed no signs of being under the influence during their interaction.

Took what he wanted: A Yorkville man said he had someone working on his car who hadn’t shown up for a few days and never finished the job, Tuesday. He said a friend suggested he check his security cameras and realized the man had been removing items from his garage and taking them to his car. So far his list of things that are missing includes a grinder, air sander, exterior light, buckets and totes filled with tools, bathroom fixtures and other items, a Sawzall, a dremel, two toolboxes, a Craftsman drill, an impact Sawzall, two batteries and chargers.

Stranger danger: A woman called the FBI and then the sheriff’s department to report two men were planning to rob a Richmond resident, Tuesday. She said she’d come to the area with her boyfriend and another man but had gotten into an argument and they left her “but she knew they had plans of robbing (the resident) for gallons of moonshine he had supposedly hidden in his basement” and claimed she got nervous that they would harm the man. Deputies spoke with the resident who told them he felt he was being scammed earlier in the day and thought about calling them. He said a woman “showed up at his home and was frantically beating on his front door” and said her boyfriend had kicked her out of his car. She offered the resident $200 for a ride to Carrolton but the resident refused, telling deputies he felt “something was wrong with the entire situation” before leaving the property. Deputies told him she’d said he had “gallons and gallons of moonshine in his basement” but found nothing of the sort in his basement. They also said the only number she “conveniently” was able to give them belonged to a man who lived up the road from the resident and had been friends with the resident until the resident caught him stealing from him. The other man claimed they’d had a falling out because he caught the resident stealing from him and claimed he didn’t know the woman but had let two men who came to his property to put up tree stands use his phone. K-9 Riot was deployed to search the area, and deputies said he “gave strong indications” but they were unable to locate proof anyone had been on the resident’s property.

Booked: Peggy Beadnell, 62, and Kimberly Beadnell, 44, both of 621 Sixth St., Bergholz, warrants for child endangerment, Wednesday; Ronald Grimes, 44, Bulger, Pa., contempt, Tuesday; Kayleigh R. Matthews, 38, Weirton, failure to appear, Tuesday.
