Police reports

Steubenville Police

Refused to file: Someone told police a woman was being choked at a residence in the 600 block of North Fifth Street, Sunday. When they arrived, police said they “could hear yelling” from an upstairs apartment. The female told police they’d been arguing “over relationship complications” and didn’t want to say anything more. Police said she had “an obvious red mark on her neck” but she told them she wasn’t sure how it happened and refused medical attention. She said she feels safe with him and they’d separate for the night. Police told the man he needed to stay away from her.

Trust issues: A couple arguing over rearranging furniture caused a disturbance in the 700 block of Oakmont Avenue, Sunday. Both parties told police there was no violence or threats of violence, but the woman gathered some of her things and told police she’d come back for the rest. He claimed some of the things she was taking belonged to him, and she asked police to specifically note items she was going to pick up later, including decorations, figurines, glassware, a dog gate and bedroom suite, “in case he damaged them.”

Unhappy ending: A Sunset Boulevard resident regretted giving a homeless man a place to stay while he got back on his feet and wanted him out of her house, Sunday. Police had responded to the home because the man wanted to file a theft report, but when they got to the residence said he “did not bother to get up from laying on the bed to speak with (them).” He told police he thought the owner of the house had stolen two of his THC vapes, which he called puffers, and said he wanted to use it and could not, though he didn’t see her take them and couldn’t remember where he last saw them or where he usually places them. He said he was sure she stole them because “her eyes don’t lie,” but he also admitted to police he hadn’t searched for them, either. The owner of the house told police she doesn’t use vapes or marijuana and has no idea what he is talking about but he’s done nothing but cause problems in the house and lays around on an air mattress she bought for him and screams at her, accusing her of things, and scares her grandchildren. Police said she told them she wanted him out of her house and said when the man heard that he “sat up from his bed, returned the house key to (her) and began packing up his belongings” and in the process found one of his “missing” vapes. As he left, police told them “it was a nice day to go fishing.”

Misguided: A resident in the 1300 block of Oak Grove Avenue told police juveniles he’s been having a problem with stole a case of water off his porch and were selling it at the street corner, Sunday. When police spoke with the kids they blamed each other for stealing the water. Police told them to stay off other people’s property and if they stole again there would be consequences, then tracked down the mother to let her know what they’d been up to. Police said the case of water was returned to the original caller.

Punched: A woman in the 100 block of Adams Street told police her child’s father punched her on the right side of her face, then broke her window glass, Sunday. Police said she had some swelling but refused medical attention and would not pursue charges, though she did want a protection order.

Flame out: A porch fire had been reported in the 1300 block of Oregon Avenue, Sunday. Firefighters told police the homeowner told them he thought someone had set the fire. Police said there was some burned garbage on the sidewalk but the porch itself wasn’t damaged, and the homeowner told them he didn’t know how it started but when he saw it he “kicked it off his porch to prevent damage to the residence.” Police inspected the debris and discovered “hundreds of cigarette butts.”

Skipped checkout: A man went behind the checkout counter at the Downtown Speedway and grabbed two packs of cigarettes, Sunday. The cigarettes were only valued at $24, but the manager said they want to pursue charges and a lifetime ban against the man, who police recognized.

Silliness: A South Sixth Street resident said her neighbor threatened her, Saturday. She said the two of them had “somewhat of an argument over matters relating to the children that frequently run through the area” and claimed he told her to kiss his backside though his mother said she was the one who said that. The caller said he also referred to her mother using a derogatory term. Both parties eventually agreed they’d argued but no threats were exchanged. Police told them neighbors have been known to argue and it wasn’t a police matter and advised both of them “to act like adults and discontinue calling (police) for disagreements.”
