Steubenville Police

Charged: A city resident is facing charges after he allegedly assaulted his girlfriend, two younger females and his pre-school aged son, Monday. A caller reported hearing the couple fighting inside a residence in the 500 block of Cedar Avenue and believed it to be physical. Police said when they arrived they saw “a group of people holding (the male) down … on the sidewalk” and a woman walked out of the house holding a metal baseball bat. She gave it to police, who secured it in a cruiser and separated all involved. Police said James Selman, no age or address listed, was charged with domestic violence and public intoxication after bystanders told police they heard what they thought was an altercation between Selman and a female and claim they saw him “kick out the window air conditioning unit from an upstairs bedroom.” One of them said when they went outside to speak with the woman, Selman “allegedly became angry about (him) talking to (her)” and came at him “in an aggressive manor and then put him in a headlock.” He said the two of them “began physically fighting” and a neighbor jumped in to help him. Police said two females who’d been in the residence “were extremely upset and crying” and told police Selman “was throwing everyone” inside the residence, including a young child. Police said the juvenile females told them they jumped in to help Selman’s girlfriend when she walked in the room and saw him holding her by the hair, and claim he threw one of them across the room and tried to throw the other down the stairs, then hit the young boy’s chest and head when he walked out of his room. They also claimed he popped an air mattress with a knife. Police said the young boy had a mark on his shoulder, one female said when he threw her she hit her head on the wall and could not feel her ear, another had a scratch on her foot and a mark on her finger. His girlfriend declined to file charges, as did the neighbors who tried to help her, but police advised they “would be pursing charges on everyone’s behalf.”

Couldn’t wait: A resident in the 1500 block of Euclid Avenue said someone kicked his basement door in and broke two windows, Tuesday. He said he’d been away from home for a short time and when he returned he discovered the damage and told police a few days earlier he’d kicked out a couple who had been renting his basement. Police said he told them the couple had left some of their belongings in his basement and when he returned home he spoke with them “and they advised they broke into his residence in order to gather (them).” He said some of their things were still in his basement but they left when he told them he was calling police.

Charged: A woman who allegedly refused to leave a business in the 700 block of Market Street and then told police she wasn’t going to leave because “she had done nothing wrong” ended up in the county jail, Wednesday Police said Miranda M. Martin, 40, of North Street was charged with criminal trespass after employees told them they wanted to pursue charges. They said they’d asked her to leave the property because she allegedly was “asking other customers for money.” Martin also was served with a bench warrant issued by Steubenville Municipal Court, they said.

Stranger things: A Euclid Avenue resident told police she found a broom stick with a kitchen knife attached to it, Monday. She said she found it in her backyard and didn’t want her grandchildren to find it.

Came up missing: Police were told sometime in the last seven weeks someone stole a black Yacht Club jet ski trailer from a fenced-in lot in the 200 block of South Third St., Tuesday.

Stolen: A North Fourth Street resident said someone stole his DoorDash delivery from Dollar General, Tuesday. He said the items were left in front of his apartment and said he spent about $20 on the missing items, but “could not tell (police) what was ordered.”

Move along: A woman was sleeping on the side of a business in the 1400 block of University Boulevard, Monday. Police told her she needed to leave the property.

Perceptions: A North Fifth Street resident claimed she was being threatened, Tuesday. Police said the woman told them she was “in fear of (a) male and it was making her sick.” She requested an ambulance take her to the hospital. Police said the male was not present when they spoke with her and not in the area, and noted “no actual threats were made and the female only advised that she felt that she was threatened.”

Volatile: A Sherman Avenue resident claimed that when the mother of his child was dropping the child off, she began arguing with him and punched him in the face while he was holding the child, Tuesday. He told police he just wanted to be left alone. She said the male “was refusing to watch the child” and said he lunged at her first, so she punched him in self-defense. She didn’t want to pursue charges.

Booked: Chanz I. DeGarmo, 22, 306 Petrick Ave., Mingo Junction, warrant for theft, Monday. Police said they also charged DeGarmo with possession of drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia after allegedly finding a glass pipe in his pocket along with a small bag containing glass-like shards of what they believe to be methamphetamine.

Slashed: A Cleveland Avenue resident said someone slashed the tires on her vehicle and her ex’s vehicle, Tuesday. Police said they didn’t see any other cars in the area that had been damaged
