Steubenville Police

Stating the obvious: A woman who’s been using her personal information to enter contests said she is receiving suspicious telephone calls, Thursday. She told police she received a call from someone purporting to be from Publisher’s Clearing House asking her to “purchase gift cards and provide him with the card information,” and when she refused reports he “began making threats that he would caue her bodily harm.” The woman said she’s now “in fear for her life.” Police advised her to be more cautious giving information to strangers.

Charged: A city resident who had been arguing with her child’s father alleges she was gathering her things to leave when he “came up from behind her and punched her in the face with (his) closed fist,” Thursday. Police said the male “confirmed they had been arguing but denied any physical violence,” even though they did note swelling beneath her left eye. Harley Crowe, 31, 180 N. Fourth St., Steubenville, was booked into the county jail on a domestic violence charge, police said.

A resident was able to get a loose dog that was nearly struck by a vehicle on state Route 7 on a leash, but said when she tried to walk it back to its owner she “refused to take it,” Thursday. Police then spoke with the owner, who then “sent a neighbor down to retrieve the animal.” They told her if she doesn’t want her dog she needs to contact the humane society to surrender it or get on the waiting list to surrender it. In the meantime, police said they cited Willette F. Fordham, 52, 425 S. Fourth St., for having a dog-at-large.

More shots: Shots were fired in the 1300 block of Sinclair Avenue, Friday. Police said the investigation is ongoing.

No answer: A man in the 300 block of McKee Street was screaming for help, Thursday. Police said they heard him “talking loudly,” and when they spoke with him he said he was “yelling at his lawn more and that everything was OK.”

Teenagers: A city resident said she was driving on Arden Avenue when someone in a white Mitsubishi threw a cup out of the window that struck her car, Friday. She said she followed the car to the midtown Speedway “and confronted a small group of female juveniles” about the incident but “they denied any involvement.”

Robbed: A couple in the 1300 block of Park Street said someone entered a property through a rear window and stole Craftsman and a Milwaukee oscillating tools, Thursday.

Concerned caller: Police were told a suspicious male was “possibly attempting to get into vehicles” in the 600 and 700 blocks of North Fifth Street, Friday.

Overstayed: A South Street resident said a woman turned up at her home two weeks ago and told her she is homeless, so she allowed her to stay for a few days but now she won’t leave, July 16. Police spoke with the woman, who confirmed she didn’t live at the location, so they gave her a ride to the women’s shelter. The following day she returned to South Street, with the homeowner reporting the woman had “walked onto the porch…(and) began to yell that (she) owed her money,” then pointed to a car parked on Railroad Street and yelled “that’s my car” before walking away. The woman returned to the neighborhood again on Friday and was knocking on doors. The original caller, who now has an order of protection from the woman, said when she came outside the woman left the area.

Drugs: An apparent overdose was reported in the 300 block of Hill Avenue, Thursday. Steubenville firefighters said he responded to Narcan, so he was transported to the hospital for further treatment and police gave him an overdose form.

Had enough: A person in the 800 block of Rosswell told police two individuals at her residence had been arguing and the male “needed to leave,” Friday. She said nothing physical had taken place. The male left with the woman he’d been arguing with.

Brush back: A city resident said he was hit by a car while crossing the road in the 100 block of North Fourth Street, Friday. He said he stepped between two parked cars when one of them shifted into reverse and struck his leg, then left the area. Police said he had the driver’s license plate but he didn’t want to pursue charges.

No show, must go: An employee at the Fort Steuben Apartments said they were having problems with a man refusing to show them his ID, July 16. The employee said they’d instituted a new rule requiring non-residents to show identification before entering. After officers spoke with him, he showed the staff his ID.

Fraudulent: A North Seventh Street resident said she checked her credit and found a student loan had been opened in her name four months ago, July 16. The account was opened in March in Louisiana. She said the lender is working with her to correct the account information but wanted her to file a report.

A resident in the 500 block of Center Avenue reported someone broke into a parked car, “stealing an unknown amount of items,” Friday. The resident had video of the thief entering the driver’s side of the vehicle.

Noisy: Police were called to a Market Square apartment building because of a loud radio, July 16. They said they could hear it from the lower parking lot so police located the driver causing the problem and advised her she needed to lower the volume.

Out of it: A caller said a woman parked at the gas pump outside the uptown Speedway was sleeping, July 17. Police were unable to wake her up, so they used a lockout kit to get in the vehicle, which stirred her. Police moved her vehicle out of the way, and she was transported to the hospital for evaluation.

Vandalized: Two lights at the entrance to Finley United Methodist Church were broken overnight, July 17.

Code issues: Notices of violation were sent to owners/occupants of properties at 1339 Wellesley Ave., 1335 Ridge Ave., 1348 Oak Grove Ave., 1504 Ridge Avenue, 1417 Oak Grove Ave., 1430 Pennsylvania Ave., 1426 Pennsylvania Ave., 1414 Oregon Ave., 1417 Oregon Ave., 1505 Maryland Ave., 1506 Oregon Ave., 211 Ohio St., 225 Ohio Street, 506 Woodlawn Rd., 612 Brady Ave., 211 Ohio St., 1103 Cardinal St., 1109 Cardinal St., 2646 Alvaredo Blvd., 1107 Hillary Square, 1111 all for high grass/weeds. Also, 1605 Ridge Ave., “junk and what appears to be painting and maintenance materials being stored on the front porch and driveway,” plus high grass/weeds; 1616 Ridge Ave., “junk and trash” scattered on property and front porch, plus high grass/weeds; 1402 Ridge Ave., two couches in a vacant lot; 515 Lawson Ave., junk and litter piled on the front porch, high grass/weeds; 1302 State St., garbage bags, mattresses and furniture in back yard of residence; 1109 Hillary Square, high grass/weeds and sidewalk covered in dog feces.

Suspects caught: Two men were taken into custody after a caller reported seeing a pair of intruders dressed in camouflage breaking into another man’s property in Mount Pleasant township, July 16. A caller reported seeing two men “come up from behind the building on foot.” Harrison County sheriff’s deputies were already near the property and detained two men they allegedly found inside the house. According to court records, Robert J. Wilson, 35, 318 Hanna Ave., Adena and David M. Tittle, 57, 803 Columbus Ave., Martins Ferry, were each charged in Dillonvale county court with theft with a specification that the alleged victim was elderly and burglary.

Animal issue: A Wintersville man said a red-nosed pit bull “that’s been causing issues in the neighborhood for two years” bit his mother’s dog, July 16.
