Steubenville Police

Loaded: A Market Square resident said a man standing in the upper parking lot had been brandishing a firearm, Wednesday. He told police he was standing at the corner waiting on a female friend to walk to him when he thought the man was staring at him and asked him what he was looking at. He said the two of them had words and then the man drove over to the parking lot and went into one of the buildings, then came out with a gun and “racked the slide of (it.)” The juvenile he’d been waiting for walked up and tried to talk to the man to de-escalate the situation but told police the man “racked the slide and then pointed the gun at (the caller.)” The caller told police he wants to pursue charges and pointed to a man who walked out of the building, then immediately reentered it as police watched. Police said he refused to respond when they tried to speak with him.

Bizarre: A man in the 2400 block of Sunset Boulevard told police his girlfriend was “throwing items at him and breaking things inside the apartment,” then she called and claimed she was “being held captive,” Wednesday. The man was leaning against his car when police arrived and told them his girlfriend “has been acting different lately and doing things such as throwing items, breaking things and doing things such as throwing items, breaking things and barricading herself inside rooms.” She told police she was “mad about him bringing other women in the apartment” and that he was angry “because she was singing which is her way of taunting him and making comments about the situation.” She also alleged that in the past he’d “struck her in the head and body” and said she “threw cans at him…to keep him from ‘coming at her.” She also said she barricades herself in the living room with her child so the toddler isn’t “roaming the house” while she’s sleeping. He said he was leaving for the night so police left, only to be called back when she called to say he was “coming at her” but then also said he was locked in the bathroom. Police returned to the property to find him still outside, sitting in his car. He told them he had not gone back inside and was only there because he was waiting for his friend to get off work so he could go there. The woman then told police she doesn’t feel safe at the apartment and wanted to go to a shelter but when she talked to an employee at one of them she was told she needed to file charges. Police said she “then began stating that (he) hit her in the dead (Wednesday) even though she’d previously told them he’d hit her days earlier. Police said she also told them she had small bruises on her arms but they said the bruises she referenced “appeared almost healed and that she … herself (had said) were very old bruises.” She was not accepted at the shelter so she left the area.

Nodding off: Someone reported a man asleep in the drive-through of a city fast-food place, Thursday. Employees thought he might be under the influence of alcohol, but police said there was no sign he’d been drinking when they spoke with him. The man told them he was “waiting in (the) drive-through for about 20 minutes” and had “worked all day and was tired.”

Dog rescue: A caller was concerned that a dog tied to a porch in the 1500 block of Foster Place was going to hang itself, Wednesday. Police said the dog’s leash was wrapped around the railing, but the dog wasn’t in immediate danger and was not hanging by its neck. A juvenile in the residence untangled it.

Piling on: Police took a woman into custody along Dock Street who was wanted for failure to appear, Wednesday. As soon as she was handcuffed she said “she needed to go to the hospital due to her swallowing a bag,” police said. Once at the hospital she was told she would face an escape charge if she left but minutes later they said she “ran from the hospital.”

Stymied: A repossession agent tried to collect a vehicle that had been towed for the police department but the tow truck operator wouldn’t release it, Wednesday. The business owner said when he told the agent he was not releasing the vehicle to him he said the agent told him he “was not leaving without (it),” but changed his mind when the business owner called police. The business owner said in the past, financiers have notified him when they’re sending someone for a vehicle in his care and pay him for his services.

Issued summons: Employees at Wal-Mart allege a city resident attempted to leave the store without paying for more than $160 in merchandise, Wednesday. Semira Pame, 22, 1110 Apt. C, Lincoln Ave., was charged with misdemeanor theft.

Stolen: Homeowners in the 700 block of Lawson Avenue said their red lawnmower was stolen overnight, Wednesday. They said the mower was in their yard Tuesday night but was gone the following morning.

Code issues: Notices of violation were sent to owners/occupants of properties at 2618 Cleveland Ave., 324 S. Fourth St., 451 S. Fourth St., 4701 Scioto Drive, high grass/weeds.
