Scissors hand: A man who had business with Social Security was upset when he was told he couldn’t bring his trauma scissors into the office, Wednesday. Police were told the man “became argumentative” when a security officer told him the scissors weren’t allowed in the office but left before police arrived. When they spoke with him, the man said he’d already agreed to leave when he was told he couldn’t go in with the scissors, but then the security guard told him he was being detained and could not leave until police arrived.
Mission impossible: A city resident who police said appeared to think she was a federal agent on a special ops mission in Steubenville told police “they” were breaking into her house, tampering with (her things) as well as removing her teeth while she is sleeping,” Wednesday. Police said she didn’t appear to be in duress or in need of emergency services and told them she only wanted police to “be aware and forward the report to the federal government.”
Trashy look: A woman in the 2500 block of Chestnut Street complained her neighbor “came outside and had words with her about her property,” Wednesday. She said the neighbor told her “she needed to clean the property up” and felt the neighbor’s tone was threatening. Police did note there was construction debris “scattered” across the yard and told the caller to avoid speaking with the neighbor. They also explained to her what she’d have to do to get a protection order if the problem continued. They also spoke with the neighbor, who said she was “just expressing her concerns for the trash” in the yard and told police it “was an eyesore.” The neighbor said it was the caller who “took the discussion to an argument level.” Police told the woman upset with the trashy conditions to stay away from the owner of the property and suggested she contact the code enforcement officer and building inspector.
All in the family: Police were called to the 2600 block of Chestnut for a disturbance, Wednesday. The homeowner said his daughter and grandson had been arguing, but they were allowed to be there, and they were both leaving. Police advised the pair that “they could not fight and argue in public.”
Mystery man: A caller reported seeing a man “with head tattoos walking down the street with a kitchen knife” in the 100 block of Oak Grove Avenue and then in the alley headed toward Brady Avenue, Wednesday. A second caller said the item “appeared to be a small machete.” Police patrolled the area and said they didn’t find anyone matching the description, then went to speak with the Oak Grove resident who’d first reported seeing the individual as well as her boyfriend, “who matched the description given,” but they weren’t home.
Snoopy: A woman said a man came on a property in the 300 block of South Fourth Street and removed several tarps that were covering household items, Wednesday. She said nothing was damaged and he had already left the area.
On second thought: A city resident told police his 13-year-old son didn’t want to go to school, Wednesday. After speaking with an officer, the boy decided to go to class.
Welfare checked: Police were asked to check on a possibly intoxicated employee at a Mall Drive store, Wednesday. The employee said he was just tired.
Hunger buster: A caller asked police to check on a man parked near the air pump at a downtown gas station, Wednesday. The man told them “he was just using his phone and eating a candy bar,” then left the area.

Helping himself: A caller complained of a suspicious male “walking around an abandoned structure” on Narrows Road, Rayland, Wednesday. He said he’d met one of the owners and the prowler “didn’t look” anything like him. Deputies found a man in the building who said he took a bus from Martins Ferry and told them he was there “to retrieve copper wire from the residence.” He told deputies he knew the owner had passed away and since the property was abandoned he decided to take any wire and tools he found on the property. Deputies said they couldn’t reach the decedent’s heirs so the intruder was released but they confiscated his backpack, which was stuffed with wire and tools.
Nipped in the bud: A blue Dodge pickup registered to an Elkins man was spotted backed up to the fence by the Brown’s Island bridge, Thursday. The bridge leads to the old Weirton Steel coke plant, which has been plagued by wire thefts in recent months. Deputies located the driver and a female companion, who claimed they were fishing. They were told to leave.
