Jefferson County Sheriff

Social media remorse: A woman who commented on a post about someone she’d gone to school with being arrested says since he got out, he’s causing problems for her, Sunday. She said he “must have read her post and started to harass her” so she blocked him, but now she’s getting threatening messages “and being harassed on Messenger by (his) friends and mother.”

Fanciful: A caller told dispatchers he was jumped “by unknown males” in Martins Ferry, “held at gunpoint and blindfolded, thrown in his (car) and was able to escape into the woods,” Sunday. He said he called the sheriff’s department “because he believes he’s up on the hill above Yorkville” and could see the men who assaulted him “walking nearby with flashlights … and he was afraid to move.” Deputies were all out on the road so dispatchers attempted to contact police in Martins Ferry and Belmont County for assistance, but the call went dead and they couldn’t get him back on the line. Later, they noted none of the departments involved in the search were able to locate him using the name and date of birth that he’d provided, adding he eventually called back and advised “he could see the lights of the cruisers driving by but could not come out because the men looking for him were only about 50 feet away from him.” The department’s drone was deployed but there was no sign of him.

Mutual combatants: Deputies were told a couple in Adena was in a physical altercation and the male was on top of his female companion and holding her down while she screaming at him to “get … off me,” Sunday. The male fled before deputies arrived but the woman told them he’d “come into their bedroom, yelling about her being in bed avoiding him all day” and started an argument, so she “began to throw things in the room … which led to (him) grabbing her by the throat (and) holding her down on the bed, then let go of her throat and held her down by the arms/shoulders while screamed for him to” get off her. She said children walked in during the confrontation and when they saw him on top of her, ran out to call for help. Deputies said she had red marks on her throat and scratch marks on her shoulder/collar bone area,” but she didn’t want to pursue charges because she “didn’t want to put him in jail again.”

All too common: A Bloomingdale woman said her daughter “threatened to beat her up if she calls the cops on her,” Sunday. She told deputies her daughter has “been known to use crack and cocaine” and “primarily supports herself and her habit by stealing from her” and the argument that day began after she caught her daughter stealing an impact wrench from the garage. She was able to get the tool back but said it was when she told her daughter she would call for help that her daughter threatened her. She said nothing physical had taken place but she is “psychologically and emotionally exhausted” with her daughter’s choices and wanted her to be removed from her home “so she could restore some peace.” The daughter had disappeared when deputies arrived and there was no sign of her initially, but while they were talking to the mother deputies said they heard a noise in the basement and found her “hiding in a pile of clothes.” She denied threatening her mother but agreed to leave the house and stay with a friend, but had to give deputies directions to the woman’s home because she didn’t know her last name. She exited the cruiser in Steubenville but “elected not to disclose (her) exact address and asked to be dropped off on the sidewalk.” Mom was advised what she would have to do to have her daughter evicted

Regrets: A man in Yorkville called 9-1-1 and then told dispatchers he’d “like to cancel my … call,” even though they could hear “a lot of commotion going on in the background,” Sunday. They said the asked the caller what was going on “due to hearing yelling from a female and other individuals in the background,” but he said he “made a mistake and was going to end this.” He said he’d gone there to check on a female who is schizophrenic and then kept repeating “he made a mistake and should not have come (there) to check on her.” He would not give police her name or location and hung up on them, and when they called back continued to say he shouldn’t have gone there and he didn’t want her “going to jail or put away.”

Grabbed and ran: A Dillonvale woman said her ex dropped their kids off at her home while she was at work, then stole her vehicle registration tags from her bedroom, Saturday. She said she lets him drive her van sometimes and he has a set of keys but said he “took the tags when she wasn’t home and they don’t belong to him.”

Got help: A county resident said a male at her location “needed help,” Friday. The male then got on the phone and asked if the call was being recorded and if he was safe. After being assured he was, he told them “the earth was his mom, water was his dad and he had light inside of him, shooting out,” later adding he is a superhero and wanted to “talk to the president.” He was transported to the hospital for assistance.

Steubenville Police

Dysfunctional bunch: A woman reported a physical altercation with her daughter after the daughter accused her of losing her car keys and allegedly began addressing her “disrespectfully,” Friday. She said she “grabbed her daughter by the arm and attempted to pull her out of her bedroom” and when she told her to leave her home, claims the girl tried “to choke her.” She said her ex arrived at the home and “began kicking the door,” but officers found no signs of it. She also claimed her ex “threatened to kill her” during a phone call but no one else heard it. Her daughter admitted she was rude to her mother but denied (assaulting) her” and claimed her mother “shoved her first and then secure her in some sort of chokehold.” She told police she walked away but her mother came back for more and alleged that this time she was “shoved to the ground and choked again.” Police said they were shown photos from earlier in the day in which the daughter had “multiple large bruises,” and reported seeing some minor redness around her neck. Neither of them wanted to pursue charges, but the ex was told he’s not to return to the woman’s property.

Hanging on: Damage was discovered to two vehicles and the owner of one of them told police her ex was responsible, Sunday. The windshield on one of the vehicles was shattered and the passenger side damaged, police said. There also was a small scratch on the front driver’s side bumper of the other vehicle and “multiple bricks on the ground surrounding both vehicles,” police said. The woman said when she tried to turn her flood lights on she discovered the light bulbs had been unscrewed. The woman told police she’s been having “issues” with her ex since their breakup more than six months ago.

Family fighting: A resident told police a family member is threatening her, Sunday. The resident said they haven’t spoken in a few years, but the family member is now threatening to press charges against the resident if the resident doesn’t accept his calls. The resident has blocked his phone number several times but said he “continued to call…from new phone numbers.”

Move along: Police had to tell a woman sleeping in the lobby of a city business that she can’t stay there, Friday. She said she didn’t want to go back to her home and had nowhere else to go, but eventually accepted a ride home.

Growing pains: A woman told police she was shopping downtown when her ex-boyfriend saw her “and began calling her names,” Friday. When she told him she was calling police he fled on foot.

Push came to shove: A woman in the 600 block of North Fifth Street wanted a male to leave the premises but because he lives there he couldn’t be forced to leave, Friday. Police said she decided she would leave.

Adding on: A woman wanted on two warrants out of Belmont County was located in the woods in the 100 block of Lawson Avenue, Saturday. Police said Pachian J.K. Watkins, 29, of Akron was served with the warrants for failure to appear and also charged with possession of drugs and possessing drug paraphernalia after they allegedly located two glass vials in her purse. One vial contained “a white, rock-like substance and the other a fluid with a soaked cotton swab,” police said. Pachian allegedly said the substances were cocaine base and methamphetamine, police said.

Let themselves in: A resident flagged police down to say she noticed a neighbor’s residence appeared to have been broken into, Saturday. Police said the doors were “wide open” and the rear door “had obviously been kicked in as the door was severely damaged and broken near the locking mechanism” and the interior was ransacked.

Entered: A woman in the 4000 block of Scioto Drive reported someone ransacked her parked car, Saturday. She said she didn’t realize anything was wrong until she spotted items out of place in the car and then saw her personal belongings “thrown throughout her yard.” She said nothing of value appeared missing.

Booked: Two men were charged after a traffic stop on Sunset Boulevard at Mucci Way, Saturday. Police said Jared M. Joynson, 28, 305 Ohio St., Brilliant, was charged with possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia after they allegedly found a white rock-like substance believed to be methamphetamine in a plastic bag tucked in a box with his name on it and within his reach as well as a cut straw with residue believed to be cocaine base on the floorboard at his feet. Police said his passenger, Michael A. Sharpe, 49, 723 N. Sixth St., Steubenville, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia after cut straws with residue were allegedly found between his seat and the center console and also on the floorboard. Joynson also was cited for having a loud exhaust.

Assault reported: A city resident said she was lying on her couch when the father of her children “began to choke her with one hand,” then squeezed her face, Sunday. Police said they didn’t see any markings on her neck but she did have a small cut on her bottom lip. She was adamant she doesn’t want to file charges.

Noisy bunch: Someone complained about a gathering in the 400 block of Logan Street “causing a nuisance to neighbors,” Sunday. Police said they found a “loud radio and a small fire” so they advised a group of college students that there’s a city ordinance governing loud radios and they advised they would keep the noise to a minimum and the fire department extinguished their fire.

Code issues: Notices of violation were sent to the owner/occupant of a property at 1344 Oak Grove Ave., litter and junk accumulating “in the front yard, on the porch and in the back yard again.” Officers said the resident “has received several notices during the past three years.” Also, 1612 Ridge Avenue, a couch and other indoor furniture in front yard; the owner of a white Chevy Trax parked in the 300 block of Murphy Avenue with expired plates was towed and a citation issued.

Cited: De’Andrew Smith, 34, Cleveland, failure to reinstate. Employees at Kroger told police a man had stuffed merchandise into a big and fled, then identified “everything in (his) bag” as having come from the store, police said.

Cited: Devin Brandon, 29, 1415½ Maryland Ave., Steubenville, driving under suspension and display of plates. Brandon told police he’d just purchased the vehicle the day before in Pittsburgh, but the seller “was in the process of getting the vehicle transferred to (his) name.” Police said a VIN check was done on the vehicle and learned it “was out of Florida and had no other information.” It was towed.
