Walking wounded: Police were asked to intercede with a man who allegedly “threatened bodily harm with a firearm” but currently had just a pocketknife, Thursday. When they entered his home, they said the man “became upset” and admitted he wanted to harm himself and at one point lunged toward a window and tried to “head-butt” it. By that time, police said they’d realized he’d already cut his neck with the knife and had to struggle to get him away from the window, eventually hitting him in the midsection to get him on the ground so they could get him under control. They helped him to the sofa but while they waited for city firefighters to arrive to take him to a hospital, police said he “began hitting his head off a nearby wall.” They carried him to the ambulance, reporting he became “extremely combative” and refused to move. When they tried to put him on the cot police said he “kicked one of the Steubenville firemen in the left shoulder and side of the face” and then “head-butted (another fireman) in the groin.” Two officers rode in the ambulance with him but the man still managed to kick one of them in the head, and once at the hospital treated bystanders to “obscenities and racial slurs” and had to be put in a spit mask after he tried to spit on police and ambulance personnel. Upon closer examination police report the man’s self-inflicted wounds were not deemed life threatening and due to his aggressive behavior he was deemed untreatable.
Passive-aggressive: A Ridge Avenue resident was concerned about a ladder being stored on her side of a fence, but not enough to talk to the workers who put it there or the neighbor who was having work done, Thursday. She told police she has dogs and is “concerned the workers may enter her yard and fright her animals or leave the gate open and let her dogs out.”
Disappeared: A caller reported seeing a man walking in the street on the Lawson Avenue overpass, Thursday. Police didn’t find him.
Slippery conditions: Four people reported injuries after a driver allegedly lost control of his car on snow and ice at the intersection of John Scott Highway and Mall Drive, Wednesday. Police report David Everhart, 63, 2645 Alvarado Blvd., Steubenville, told them he was trying to turn right onto Mall Drive when he slid into the front end of an oncoming vehicle. Both vehicles sustained heavy front-end damage, and two of the injured were transported to Trinity Medical Center West for further treatment, police said. Police said Everhart was found to have an outstanding assault warrant and was booked into the Jefferson County jail without bond. He is scheduled to appear in Municipal Court Monday.
Lucky: Police were asked to check on a man in the 3600 block of Sunset Boulevard, Wednesday. He told police he’d been hit by a car but was not injured. Police told him in future to “stay put and call (police.)”
Slid: No citations were issued after a two-vehicle accident at Market and Ninth streets, Wednesday. A motorist eastbound on Market told police he saw another vehicle “traveling slowly in front of him” because of the weather and when he braked, he lost control of his car, rear-ending the other vehicle. No injuries were reported and both vehicles were drivable, police said.
Behaving badly: Two individuals who “have come into (the downtown Speedway) multiple times with a bag” were asked to leave it at the counter and refused, then got upset when they were asked to leave, Wednesday. The clerk said the pair “began to threaten him” but left when police were called. Police were unable to locate the duo but said they’ll be trespassed if they return to the property.
Nodding off: Somone reported seeing a vehicle “parked at the gas pumps for a long period of time” outside Circle K, Thursday. Police spoke with the driver, who said she’d fallen asleep. Police said there was no indication of impairment so she was allowed to leave the area.
Had enough: A Pennsylvania Avenue resident needed police assistance with an unruly juvenile, Thursday. The juvenile “allegedly broke a window and was causing a disturbance,” police said. After speaking with both parties, police said the juvenile agreed to go to his room for the remainder of the night.
Some friend: A city resident told police an individual known to him “has opened several credit cards in his name,” Wednesday.
Just essentials: Employees at Wal-Mart reported a male stole baby wipes and formula worth just under $17, Wednesday.
Booked: Christopher Bennett, 20, Wrightstown, Pa., warrants (Wintersville) for telephone harassment and criminal trespass, Thursday.
Served: Arin Goldsmith, 29. 1344 Ridge Ave., Steubenville, warrant for child endangerment and possession of drugs, Tuesday. Police said Goldsmith told them he’d accidentally called 9-1-1 and once he told them all was well, they served the warrant. He also was charged with possession of drugs after a bag containing three grams of a substance believed to be fentanyl was found in his possession, police said.

Grinched: A Mingo Junction area resident was upset “people were cutting trees down on a property behind her house,” Dec. 24. Deputies said when they told the woman they can’t stop a property owner or his designee from cutting down trees on his property she responded by telling them, “Merry Christmas for nothing” and hung up. The deputy went to her property to speak with her in person and when he told her they could ask the individuals cutting the trees to do so “in a safe manner,” she said she “was OK with that” but they were unable to find a safe route to the top of the hill and were unable to make contact.
Scavengers strike: Someone stole about 80 feet of copper phone lines, Dec. 25. An AT&T representative showed deputies the location of the missing line, which he’d discovered when he was trying to ‘help a customer who was reporting no dial tone in his home phone.”
