Steubenville Police

Overindulged: Police spotted a woman “wearing only underwear along with a top and …one of her shoes” lying on the ground “in a field” by Fifth and Adams streets,” Saturday. They said they called out several times as they approached but she didn’t respond, and once there stirred her by shaking her arm. The woman had “impaired speech and (showed) confusion when responding to questions and advised “she and her fiancé” had been drinking at a downtown establishment and “got into a verbal” disagreement, but denied drugs were involved and was taken to the hospital for evaluation. Justice Irby, 31, 905 Pittsburgh St., Steubenville, was cited for disorderly/intoxication, police said.

Damaged goods: An employee at Shoe Department Encore reported a customer trying to return a purse that had obviously been used was irate when she found out she wasn’t getting her money back and assaulted her, Saturday. The employee said the woman had bought the purse a few days earlier, but when she returned it for the refund it was already “dirty inside and had stains on it.” When she couldn’t remove the dirt and stains, the employee said she told the woman she couldn’t refund her money and gave the used bag back to her but the customer “pushed it back and told (her again) she wanted her money (back).” The employee said when she pushed the purse back to the customer’s side of the counter, the woman “grabbed her left hand and scratched her with her fingernail” before storming out of the store and getting in the passenger seat of a gray BMW with blacked out windows.” The employee believes the customer, who has been identified, deliberately scratched her and wanted to pursue charges, police said.

Stand out: A Weirton woman was booked into the Jefferson County Justice Center in lieu of bond after she allegedly tried to flee Family Dollar with merchandise she hadn’t paid for, Friday. Police said Mary Eddy, 37, 3019 West St., was charged with misdemeanor theft and resisting arrest after she was identified as the female “with multi-colored hair carrying a large white purse” who employees claimed left the store with clothing and two cans of soda valued at just under $20 that she hadn’t paid for. Police said Eddy also was served with two outstanding warrants for misdemeanor theft, so bond was set at $25,000.

Crowded: A downtown resident told police there was someone in his apartment, Friday. He said when he entered his apartment he saw “a male inside” and showed them a window that was open though police said the screen “was intact” and nothing appeared to have been broken or missing. Police said they noticed the individual “was pacing throughout the residence as he pointed to things that did not even exist” and concluded he either was “in some way intoxicated” or another issue was at play.

All ears: An Oak Grove Avenue resident told police she was being harassed, Sunday. She said a “group of people were talking about her” and that she was in her house and “heard them speaking about her from down the street.”

Money matters: An ATM was stolen from Viking Social Club, Saturday. No further details were available.

Fired up: A resident in the 400 block of Westwood Drive reported hearing a shot fired in a neighbor’s house, Friday. The caller said he believed there’d been another shot earlier in the day. Police spoke with a neighbor, who said he’d “recently purchased a pellet gun … and test fired it in his back yard.” He produced the gun and dry-fired it to demonstrate the noise it makes, which police said is “similar to that of a 22-rifle firing.” The homeowner was advised shooting the rifle in city limits is against the law.
