Police Beat

Steubenville Police

Couldn’t hold it: A man with an overly full bladder ended up on the wrong end of a gun after he went behind a building in the 4500 block of Sunset Boulevard to relieve himself Friday. He told police he had worked there a few years ago when it was a mechanic’s school and considered it an out-of-the-way location, but a man who was on site with his family “accosted him and an argument took place.” He told police when he tried to drive away the caller “drew a pistol, claiming he was trying to ram him.” The caller said he and his family were at the business and when he saw the man in the shadows “thought it was odd,” so he told him to leave. The caller said the two of them argued and claimed the man who’d answered nature’s call “got into his vehicle and accelerated toward (his vehicle)…as if to ram it.” The caller said he interpreted it as “a deadly threat and drew his (gun) to protect himself and his family,” holding him at gunpoint until authorities arrived. No one wanted to pursue charges so police let them leave, though police staggered their departure times and advised the man with the weak bladder that the property now belongs to the dance studio and he needs to stay away. They returned the caller’s gun to him but advised him “to contact the police concerning situations like (that one) before it escalates.”

Punch and Judy: Too close for comfort: A mother and daughter living a few doors apart in a building in the 700 block of Market Street threw punches at each other Friday. The daughter said she was walking up the steps toward her apartment when “her mother began screaming at her about her boyfriend” and it got heated. She said “everyone” thought they were going to fight so she went in her apartment to get away from her mother, and another family member was attempting to calm her down when her mother walked into her apartment, got in her face (and) pushed up against her and began screaming, so she punched her mother “and her mother began hitting her.” She said her mother “bit her” before fleeing before police could speak with her. The daughter told police she wants to pursue charges against her mother.

Head banger: A woman in the 1300 block of Wellesley Avenue who was bleeding behind her ear told police a male “struck her on the right side of her head … and had his dogs bite her on the leg and behind her ear” Friday. The male said the two of them had been arguing earlier and then she showed up at his house “and wanted to enter … (but) he would not let her in” so she tried to “push … past him,” which “provoked the dogs to bite to protect (him).” He said he didn’t hit her and only stood in the doorway to keep her from coming inside. He said she doesn’t live there but “she could stay the night” and he would lock the dogs up.

Charged: A Brilliant woman is facing charges after she allegedly ran a red light on N. 3rd at Washington Street Saturday. Police said the woman handed them a debit card when they asked for her license and claim she reeked of alcohol and was “slurring her words.” Police reported finding two open containers of alcohol in the vehicle and claim she admitted she’d been drinking earlier. Tina M. Hillard, 59, was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence.

Geared up: A driver making a delivery in the 100 block of S. 7th Street struck a vacant building Friday. He told police he thought he’d put the vehicle in park but “it slipped” and ended up hitting the building. Police said two blocks in the wall of the building were damaged, as was his fender.

Foiled: Callers said about 30 juveniles gathered outside the old movie theater at the mall Friday. The “10 or so” who didn’t run off when they saw them coming said two kids “were getting ready to fight but it was broken up” before they arrived.

Walk off: A female who had been waiting in the McDonald’s lobby for her job interview said that while she was talking with the manager a man walked off with her purse Friday. She said she’d left it in a booth while she interviewed and a man sat down next to it and was seen on security footage tucking it under his sweatshirt before leaving the restaurant. She was able to locate the man on social media and told police she’d like to pursue charges.

Drugs: Someone reported a man in a parking lot in the 100 block of N. 4th Street “impaired and hurting himself” Friday. Police said the man was “flailing around and appeared to be under the influence of narcotics,” appearing to overdose as he fell in and out of consciousness. While they were talking to him police said he reached in his pocket “and pulled out a small wad of cash as well as a snort straw and what appeared to be a small metal pipe similar to what is commonly used for smoking” drugs. The pipe and the straw were destroyed on scene and a dollar bill “folded neatly into a small square” with a very small amount of residue was confiscated before he was transported to the hospital for treatment.

Cited: Vehicles parked on the yellow curb on South Court Alley at Market Street and North 4th at Washington were ticketed.

Getting out: A man in Dillonvale “spoke of abusing his wife and that is why they are getting a divorce,” March 31. The man didn’t give a time frame for the abuse but said he “blacks out when he gets mad.” Deputies located his estranged wife, who said he was “her soon-to-be-ex-husband and no longer resides there.” She said the incident he had been referring to had occurred in December and “she is already working with an attorney and is pushing the matter through the court system.” They told her how to get protection.

Hit-skipped: A Tiltonsville woman said someone “just hit her husband’s truck and continued on,” March 31. Deputies located a vehicle in a garage on Mound Street and said the driver would be charged March 31.
