No longer welcome: Police were called Thursday to a Maryland Avenue residence regarding a reported assault and theft, but the homeowner denied calling, as did a friend she had allowed to stay there. The houseguest was confused by police presence, officers said. While the homeowner said she had not called police, she told officers the guest was no longer welcome in her home and needed to leave. Police said the guest gathered her belongings and walked to another friend’s residence but insisted “nothing happened that required police to respond and (she) wasn’t sure why (the homeowner) was upset with her.”
Fled: A man prohibited by court order from being at a city residence allegedly appeared at the protected person’s home Thursday. Police spotted the man walking away from the residence and attempted to speak with him, but said he fled while “stating several times (he) did nothing wrong.” The protected party told police she opened the door and found him there and alleged he “began verbally abusing her and (directing) obscenities” at her.
Healthy dogs: Someone reported two dogs on Dresden Avenue were being left outside for long periods and were being “poorly taken care of,” but police said both animals appeared healthy and had access to food, water and shelter under a large covered porch with a windbreak. Police noted dogs with proper food, shelter and water may remain outdoors unless temperatures exceed 90 degrees.
Pilfered: A downtown resident told police someone entered her apartment while she was away for a few minutes. When she returned, she discovered her marijuana and a pack of cigarettes were missing. She said she was certain she had shut and locked the door before leaving, but found it slightly ajar when she returned.
Money missing: A woman helping at a downtown business told police she left her purse behind the counter Thursday and someone stole $900 from it while she was not looking.
Had to move on: A man who identified himself as homeless was found sleeping in a shelter house at Beatty Park on Thursday “with items strewn about the area,” police said. Officers told him why they had been asked to check on him and advised him to “rest up and move on,” which he agreed to do.
Booked: Danielle Ortman, 32, of 800 Douglas Ave., Wintersville, was held without bond Thursday in the county jail on charges of possession of drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia and tampering with evidence. She also was served with an outstanding warrant. Police allege Ortman attempted to discard a cellophane bag before entering the justice center.
Lost and found: A Weirton woman reported Thursday that her car, which went missing about two months ago from a Linden Avenue location, had “just been located” in Steubenville. Police said the vehicle was heavily damaged and the steering column had been “ripped out and wires … appeared tampered with,” damage the owner said was not present before the vehicle disappeared. She told police she still had the title and keys. A city resident told officers she and her husband purchased the vehicle and another car from a woman who told them the title and keys were inside the vehicle, and they planned to scrap the damaged car. She said she could provide a sales receipt and contact information for the seller.
Code issues: Notices of violation were sent to owners or occupants of properties at 318 S. Fourth St., 336 S. Fourth St., 1412 Orchard St., 102 Opal Blvd., 211 Opal Blvd., 3042 Central Ave., 3066 Glendwell Road, 411 Henry Ave., 413 Henry Ave., 437 Henry Ave. and 439 Henry Ave., all for high grass violations.
Cited: Janet M. Sears, 41, of 1219 State St., Steubenville, was cited for an alleged red-light violation following a two-vehicle collision Thursday at Washington and North Fifth streets. Others receiving citations were Peggy S. Green, 35, of 117 Woodmont Ave., Steubenville, and Jessica L. Gibon, 25, of Rosemont, Minnesota, both for speeding.
