Educator groups meet

WEIRTON — The Fidelis Gamma Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa International Honorary Organization for Women Educators met at Eat ‘n Park in Weirton on April 2 with 13 members present.

President Susan Cullinan welcomed the members. Elaine McClung led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance, and she read an inspirational reading titled “Worry and Dread.”

Secretary Ruth Fuller read the minutes from the March meeting, and the minutes were approved. Treasurer Caroline Allison gave the financial report.

Altruistic Chairman Patty Ferris distributed a form so members could record their volunteer hours, monetary and nonmonetary amounts. Members are collecting coloring books, crayons and colored pencils to be donated to the pediatric unit at WVU Medicine-Weirton Medical Center and local schools.

Bylaw committee members Donna Durkin and Crystal Baranowski led a discussion on the scholarship to be given to a Brooke County student this spring.

Cullinan gave special thanks to Carolyn Allison and Ruth Fuller for their devoted help during this biennium.

Fraternity education Chair Janet Benzo presented a “Founder Fact” for founders Agnes Shipman Robertson, Marie Neal, Marion Southall and Hattie Popino. Members matched founders of Alpha Delta Kappa with facts.

Scholarship Chair Liz Pugh and member Sandi Anderson will collect scholarship applications from Brooke High School, and they will select the qualified applicant.

Committee members Cullinan and Ruth Fuller presented the slate of officers for the 2026-2028 biennium. Members voted for the slate, and officers will be inducted at the May meeting. The list includes co-presidents Carolyn Allison and Ruth Fuller, president-elect Donna Durkin, chaplain Elaine McClung, treasurer Susan Cullinan, recording secretary Patty Ferris and corresponding secretary Eileen Snyder.

Cullinan recognized Elaine McClung’s 35 years of membership in Alpha Delta Kappa.

Cullinan will attend the state convention at Pipe Stem April 24-26.

The hostesses for the meeting were Shirley Washam, Ruth Fuller and Nancy Holdsworth. Hostesses for the May 7 meeting will be Nancy Conley, Bonnie Queses and Donna Roman.

The meeting was adjourned with the singing of “The Lamp of Alpha Delta Kappa.”

Retired school employees meet

NEW CUMBERLAND — The March meeting of the Hancock County Association of Retired School Employees was held at the Immaculate Conception Church.

The meeting was called to order by President Melanie Donofe, who also led the Pledge of Allegiance and prayer.

Region One Director Kevin Brown of Clarksburg spoke to the group about volunteer hours and the importance of reporting them to the local chairperson. He said the hours will be reported to state senators and delegates. He also spoke about HUBS meetings around the state in June. The closest for Hancock County will be held in Stonewood on June 10.

During the regular business meeting, the minutes from the November meeting were read and accepted. The treasurer’s report was given by Rita Orler. A membership report was also given by Orler. There are currently 80 regular members and 41 lifetime members for a total of 121 members.

The group heard a report on the status of RIFs and transfers in the county. The 50/50 drawing was won by Terry McAtee, and the free lunch coupon was won by Mary Lou James. There were numerous door prizes handed out.

The next meeting will be held at noon April 21 at the Peach Tree Inn in Chester at the Orchards.
