Perkins reopens National Road restaurant

WHEELING – When Frank Carolla decided to close down his Perkins Restaurant and Bakery for a week and spend $250,000 for a makeover, he resolved to use a local labor force to create a new look both inside and out.

That local craftsmanship was on display Monday as Carolla was joined by several local business leaders to unveil his renovated restaurant.

Local community leaders representing the Wheeling Area Chamber of Commerce, government officials, financial leaders and local business involved in the project were on hand as Carolla snipped the red ribbon.

“We are truly pleased to have the opportunity to introduce our newly remodeled Perkins to our valued customers,” he said. “With a refreshed look and the legendary Perkins menu, we look forward to continuing to offer the best food, with generous portions and at the best value.”

He said Panhandle Cleaning and Restoration was the main contractor, and financing came from Progressive Bank. The new look includes significant external and interior design elements aimed at enhancing the guests’ overall dining experience.

Carolla said utilizing local companies to complete the project was an important part of the plan.

“We closed down at 4 p.m. Sunday and reopened at 6 a.m. Friday,” he said. “All the work was done by local companies and workers. Using local businesses that pay local taxes and provide paychecks to local residents means a great deal to us. This community is a special place and has enabled our success by continually supporting us, and we’re very grateful for that.”

Community involvement and philanthropy have been a hallmark of Carolla’s personal philosophy since opening the restaurant in 2002, as evidenced by his support of numerous local organizations and programs. Since 2007, the restaurant has served as the title sponsor of the annual Perkins Restaurant and Bakery Fantasy in Lights Parade held by the Wheeling Area Chamber of Commerce, which routinely draws more than 10,000 people to downtown Wheeling.

“In the 12 years that we’ve been in business, we’ve donated well over ($250,000) to various local charitable and civic causes,” Carolla said. “The people of this valley, and those who patronize our restaurants, are not just customers, they’re our friends and neighbors as well. And we take care of our own.”

Perkins in Woodsdale is open from 6 a.m. to midnight, Sunday through Thursday, and 24 hours Friday and Saturday.
