CERTIFICATION: Students in the Auto Service Technology 2 program at Jefferson County Joint Vocational School are learning about the principles of air conditioning and recently tested for HVAC 609 certification.

Instructor Ron Reasoner said 11 seniors completed the 609 test, which is a self-study exam that provides students with a lifetime certification upon successful completion.

“In design, the accompanying study guide teaches students about the current regulations regarding HVAC service and identifies types of refrigerants and their characteristics,” he said. “The Environmental Protection Agency states that all technicians that service air conditioning systems today, whether it be stationary or mobile types, must obtain the 609 certification.”

He added that non-compliance could result in a $10,000 fine per violation, making it all the more important for students to understand the laws.
