STEUBENVILLE -- Anne Potvin has been caring for residents at Shaffer Plaza Apartments for the past seven years and is continuing her work under a new role.
Potvin, of Wintersville, was named afternoon shift supervisor at the facility and is responsible for overseeing the three buildings and assisting staff with fulfilling clients' needs.The Steubenville Catholic Central High School grad said it has always been her nature to help and she enjoys working with the residents.
"My friend used to be the afternoon shift supervisor and he mentioned this place," she recalled. "I've had experience working in nursing homes, but never with this population. I wanted to get to know people with developmental disabilities and I love it here. Every day is a learning experience."
Her ability to help others led her to work in food service, assisted living and then as a direct service provider, or DSP, through the Jefferson County Board of Developmental Disabilities and she also cares for her aunt, Mary Kay Mortimer, outside of work. Meanwhile, her new position has become an extension of something she's always loved to do. During her time at Shaffer, she has worked in all three buildings, or homes, but had been based at Home B for four years. As a supervisor, she gets to interact with all of the facilities once again.
"You gain so much knowledge working here. It's a challenge but it's also been a blessing. We almost become like family to them and them to us. It's definitely rewarding," she said. "I've worked at all three homes and definitely missed working with all of the residents. I took this position because I wanted to make this a career and wanted to stay here and work with the residents."
Resident Manager Kassey Minor said she was a great fit for the post.
"Anne has been employed with Shaffer Plaza as a direct support professional since 2014 and has worked hard to make sure the residents are well cared for while creating personal connections with them," Minor said.
"She understands all aspects of the job and what is expected, which makes her a great choice to transition to an afternoon supervisor role. With this new role, Anne will also be responsible for training all new hires, which will ensure all trainings are completed uniformly for each new DSP that joins our team. We look forward to her starting her next chapter here at Shaffer Plaza."
