BLOOMINGDALE — Seniors in the cosmetology program at Jefferson County Joint Vocational School are adding some style to patrons at the school’s recently reopened salon.

Instructor Brianne Schoolcraft said the site, which opened its doors on Sept. 7, operates on Monday and Wednesday from 11:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the site along 1509 county Highway 22 A in Bloomingdale. Schoolcraft said she has seen a steady volume of customers from in and outside the school.

“We do three to five clients every client day,” she said, adding that about 13 seniors gain hands-on learning with every cut, style and manicure. “The students like it and it helps build their confidence. This will lead them to be more successful in the salon.”

Prices start at $3 and up and several services are available, including haircuts for men and women, perms, highlights, color, manicures, gel polishing, waxing, updos, paraffin wax and a wash and style. The site shut down during the COVID pandemic but fully reopened to the public last year. Schoolcraft, a licensed cosmetologist who began teaching at the JVS in August, has enjoyed the opportunity to prepare today’s students to become tomorrow’s professionals.

“It’s a big change,” she added. “The kids are awesome and I’d like to encourage them to work in the salon. You can be successful and this is an excellent opportunity for young kids to start in the industry.”

Eighteen juniors take part under the instruction of Diane Dalesio and are honing their skills. Cosmetology is a two-year program consisting of theory and clinical training, plus students prepare to take the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology exam. Those who pass become licensed cosmetologists and can work in salons across the state. For information or to make an appointment, call (740) 264-5545, Ext. 400.
