Marshall to serve as first president of WVU Health System Medical Group
MORGANTOWN — The West Virginia University Health System has appointed Thomas C. Marshall, M.D., as the inaugural president of the WVU Health System Medical Group. He starts his new role on May 25.
Marshall brings more than a decade of clinical and administrative leadership experience to the role, including service as vice chair of community operations for the WVU Department of Emergency Medicine and medical director of community emergency medicine. He has overseen emergency department operations across more than a dozen WVU Medicine hospitals and has played a key role in expanding systemwide emergency medicine services and quality initiatives.
In this new position, Marshall will lead strategic efforts to grow and integrate the WVU Health System Medical Group into a high-performing, patient-centered, multi-state provider network. He will report to Carrie Willetts, chief administrative officer of the WVU Health System, with a matrix reporting relationship to the WVU Health System’s chief medical officer, Michael Edmond, M.D., M.P.H., M.P.A., M.B.A.
“We are excited to have Dr. Marshall join our team in this new position. He has spent much of his career building relationships and improving care across our hospitals,” Willetts said. “His deep experience, his commitment to our mission, and his collaborative leadership style make him ideally suited to lead our medical group through this next phase of growth and alignment.”
Marshall will oversee the continued development of an integrated practice infrastructure, helping to standardize clinical quality programs, enhance access and patient experience, and support provider engagement. The WVU Health System Medical Group is expected to double in size over the next two years.
“It’s an honor to serve in this role at such a transformative time,” Marshall said. “We have a tremendous opportunity to bring together providers across communities and specialties and to create a truly cohesive, high-quality care experience for the people of West Virginia and beyond.”
The WVU Health System Medical Group formed in 2021 and has since grown to 900 physicians and advanced practice providers. Caregivers affiliated with the group practice in all 25 WVU Medicine hospitals and clinics. The group’s physicians serve in a variety of specialties and subspecialties – from primary care to advanced specialty care – and work in tandem with the WVU faculty practice plan.
Marshall earned his medical degree from the WVU School of Medicine, where he also completed his residency and chief residency in Emergency Medicine. He is a board-certified emergency physician and fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians. In addition to his administrative leadership, he maintains active faculty appointments and serves as a mentor and advisor to medical students and residents.
