Ministry's baby shower to
benefit county agency
TORONTO -- The First Presbyterian Church of Toronto's yarn ministry will host a baby shower on April 29 to benefit the Jefferson County Department of Job and Family Services.
A luncheon will be held at 12:30 p.m. in the church dining room after the Sunday service. The church is located at 116 N. Third St.
Shower item suggestions include diapers of all sizes, sleepers, outfits, plastic silverware, bibs, pacifiers, diaper cream and onesies. Items need not be wrapped.
The guest speaker will be Joan Dohnal, foster care coordinator with the Jefferson County Department of Job and Family Services.
The baby shower will include door prizes and party favors.
'100 Women in Red' event
May 3 at Mount Carmel
STEUBENVILLE -- The EmpowHER Women's Ministry of Mount Carmel Community Baptist Church will host its annual "100 Women in Red" event at 3 p.m. on May 3 at the church, which is located at 708 N. Fifth St.
The theme for this year's celebration is "The Heart of a Woman" with scripture reference from Acts 16:14. The speakers will be Chris Guio Starvaggi, a registered nurse and chief clinical officer with Acuity Specialty Hospitals of the Ohio Valley, and Tammy Gregory, certified wellness aerobics instructor, who will share information on how women can maintain heart health.
The event is open to the public. Refreshments will be served, and a free-will offering will be received. Deacon Sandi Rue is the spiritual leader of the ministry. The Rev. Benjamin L. Calvert II is the senior pastor.
Open house, May crowning
scheduled for May 19
TORONTO -- The Franciscan Sisters T.O.R. open house and May crowning will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 19 at the monastery located at 369 Little Church Road, Toronto.
The public is invited to attend and help celebrate its 30th anniversary with a family-fun day that will include pony rides, hayrides, a petting zoo and face painting.
This year's open house features a "Battle of the (Praise) Bands" from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Bands from various area churches will participate, including Grace Point Ministries in Steubenville and the Franciscan Sisters.

Philoptochos Society
designates charities
STEUBENVILLE -- The Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Philoptochos Society met for their festival shower luncheon meeting March 1 with Treasurer Rikki Kamarados presiding and 16 members attending.
The members enjoyed a Lenten meal prepared by Nick Tsouris of Maryland Market.
The festival shower is an annual event that involves members purchasing all the cleaning items needed in the kitchen during the annual Grecian Food Festival in June.
The March charity was Valley Hospice.
The Philoptochos Society members held their last dinner meeting of the season on April 12 at Undo's in Weirton. Sixteen members attended.
Kamarados opened the meeting, leading the women in the song Xplotos, Aveoil (Xristos Anesti).
The charities for now and the summer months were selected. April is the Ohio Valley Health Center; May, Trinity Emergency Assistance Relief Fund; June, MRDD; July, YWCA of Steubenville; and August, Urban Mission Ministries for its back-to-school event. A donation also was made to MACPAD.
Shut-in committee members Rana Mahfood and Gloria Sergakis delivered Easter breads to the shut-ins.
Marianne Balakos and Don Kronstein will be honored for the St. Photios at the St. Photios awards banquet today in Pittsburgh.
The group's year-end banquet will be held May 3 at Theo Yianni's in Weirton.
Church Women United to
mark May Friendship Day
WEIRTON -- The Church Women United of Weirton will celebrate May Friendship Day at 10 a.m. May 4 with a breakfast at Oakland Presbyterian Church, Wylie Ridge Road, Weirton.
The theme is "Reaching for Wholeness in Gratitude for God's Presence." Rebecca "Tish" Turner is the coordinator. Music Director Mary Ellen Groves will meet with the choir at 9:30 a.m.
The community service project will be collecting clear and fragrance-free dish and laundry detergent and fabric softener for the Lighthouse. There will be a least coin collection.
All women and pastors are invited to attend.

Toronto Catholic Women
finalize plans for events
TORONTO -- The Toronto Catholic Women met April 18 with plans discussed and finalized for upcoming events in May.
They include the ordination of Josh Erickson to the priesthood on May 18 at 7 p.m. at St. Francis Church, followed by a reception in his honor.
Reservations were taken for the 73rd-annual DCCW Catholic Woman's Club Convention, which will be held June 6 in Steubenville.
The meeting was closed with the Catholic Woman's Club prayer and blessing by the Rev. Thomas Vennitti.
Counted Ministry offering
free spaghetti dinner, comedy
RICHMOND -- The Counted Ministry of Richmond United Methodist Church is hosting a free community spaghetti dinner -- "served with a little comedy on the side" -- on Wednesday from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
The church is located at 112 S. Sugar St.
The dinner will include spaghetti, salad, bread, dessert and drinks, offering "a meal and a few laughs with joke-telling."
No free-will offering will be taken.
Urban Mission accepting
JOSHUA applications
STEUBENVILLE -- Urban Mission Ministries is accepting applications from low-income home owners in the Steubenville-Weirton area for home repair and improvement projects to be performed this summer.
All work will be performed by volunteer work teams as part of Urban Mission's annual JOSHUA project with labor and materials to be provided free of charge. Each application will be evaluated on the basis of need and the ability of the volunteer work teams to perform the job.
Home owners can pick up an application for the JOSHUA project from Urban Mission's main office, located at 301 N. Fifth St., Steubenville. All applications must be submitted by May 1. The JOSHUA program is scheduled to begin June 1.

Myrtle McHendry Class hears reports, plans May 1 meeting
WEIRTON -- The Myrtle McHendry Class of Cove Presbyterian Church met April 3 in the fellowship hall with 10 members attending.
President Peggy Baldt opened with prayer. A light luncheon was prepared and served by Bonnie Nichols. Miranda Flesher gave a spiritual reading on spring.
Reports were given by Suellen Lewis, secretary, and Diana Durst, treasurer. The group voted to give hand-stitched pictures made by Tee Gryskovich back to the family. Wooden Last Supper pictures will be given back to the Davis family, and a hand-drawn picture by Jennifer Jegerski will be given to Eleanor Cline.
Discussions were held on the Sunday school room being passed on to older children of the church for use as their weekly Sunday school.
Baldt conducted the Bible study on "Living Beyond Yourself" by Beth Moore.
The next meeting will be held May 1 and include a salad smorgasbord.
Bargain basement sale at Beech Bottom Church
BEECH BOTTOM -- A bargain basement sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 28 at Beech Bottom Community Christian Church, Third and High streets.
There will be a variety of items and crafts for sale along with a Chinese auction, concession stand and bake sale.
