East Springfield Center hosting
monthly dinner on Thursday
EAST SPRINGFIELD — The East Springfield Community Recreation and Service Center will host its monthly fundraiser dinner from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
The menu includes baked steak, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, bread, dessert and drink. The cost is $8. Children younger than 6 eat for free.
This month’s dinner will include a Chinese auction also.

The center is located on county Road 39 next to the East Springfield Volunteer Fire Hall.
Toronto Lions: Applications for
Little Miss Lion are available
TORONTO — The Toronto Lions Club is accepting applications for its Little Miss Lions 2018 competition.
It is open to all girls ages 8 to 12 who attend Toronto City Schools.
The deadline for entry applications is Aug. 21. Finalists will be selected and notified Aug. 23.
There will be five finalists and two alternates selected.
The crowning ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. Sept. 1 on the main stage during Toronto’s Festival of the Arts. Little Miss Lion is determined by the selection of the odd-colored rose. The winner will receive a tiara. All finalists will receive a gift and represent the Toronto Lions Club at parades and events.

Irondale having flea market,
produce sale on Saturday
IRONDALE — The village of Irondale flea market and produce sale, a first-time event, will be held Saturday at the park located on East Avenue, beginning at 8 a.m.
Cost to set up a table is $10. Anyone can set up, and vendors are welcome.
“This is the one time we have had something like this, but many have asked us to do something the people might enjoy,” notes Jean Tice, who can be contacted for information by phone at (330) 532-2543 or by e-mail at ticede@comcast.net.
The event will be held rain or shine.
Greater Weirton Senior Center
notes schedule of activities
WEIRTON — The Greater Weirton Senior Center, 3425 Main St., has announced several events for August.
They include:
¯ Thursday: Dance with live music by the Sands of Time. There is a $5 door fee and free refreshments. The band plays from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
¯ Aug. 10: Bingo is planned with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. Early bird starts at 6 p.m. with regular bingo beginning at 6:30 p.m. Concessions will be available.
¯ Aug. 16: Dance with live music by Light Touch. The band plays from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. There is a $5 door fee and free refreshments.
¯ Aug. 26: The annual kings and queens card party will include door prizes, table prizes, a 50/50 drawing and a Chinese auction. Tickets are $10, available at the center and include lunch.
The center also is hosting a daily rummage sale as part of its activities.
The sale runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday and features clothes, dishes, jewelry, watches with new batteries and other items, according to Norma Gosney, who explained proceeds help keep the center running.
Donations of items are needed and appreciated, she added. They can be dropped off at the center during those times. A section of large-sized clothing is planned.
Three Score Seniors to have
picnic theme at next meeting
WEIRTON — The July meeting of the Three Score Seniors was held at Undo’s in Weirton with Mary Margaret Klepadlo giving an opening prayer and leading in opening ceremonies.
President Kathy McCarrick presided at the meeting where Vice President Mary Ellen Groves introduced Chuck Lucas, who provided the entertainment, playing guitar and singing. August entertainment will feature performers Two Old Geezers and carry a picnic theme.
Secretary Barbara Purks and Treasurer George Pohlman gave reports. Membership Chair Nancy Smurda announced the club has 89 members. Anyone interested in joining the group can contact any member for information.
Winnie Kemp, sunshine chair, reported on cards sent and received and noted the celebration of an anniversary.
Reservations Chair Vivian Weigel noted 55 members and two guests were attending. Dee Dauber was a guest of Vivian Weigel, and Joyce Nash was a guest of Brenda Edwards.
Historian Lee Edwards and Brenda Edwards had albums updated and on display.
Hospitality Chair Jim Hare, assisted by Lee Edwards, awarded prizes to Cindy Richards, Winnie Kemp, Marlene Hare and Nick Dragisich. The 50/25/25 winners were Lee Edwards and Betty Virtue. Free dinners given by Betty Virtue and Cookie Veltri went to Larry Purks and Kathy McCarrick.
Klepadlo gave the benediction.
The group’s next meeting is scheduled for Aug. 23.
Pool party Aug. 9 in Weirton
for autistic, disabled
WEIRTON — The West Virginia Northern Panhandle Autism Society is sponsoring a free pool party for any individuals with disabilities and their families from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 9 at Starvaggi Memorial Pool.
Pizza and other snacks will be provided by the group, which doesn’t provide supervision for attendees.

Craft class to be held
WELLSBURG — The Brooke County Library will hold a craft class for adults and young adults at 5 p.m. Aug. 9.
Participants will create paper flowers that can be used as centerpieces and decorations and should bring a glue gun, glue sticks and a pair of scissors.
