Energy Express seeks applicants for position
Energy Express, a nationally recognized, statewide summer reading and nutrition AmeriCorps program for West Virginia's children, is accepting applications for the position of site supervisor.
Energy Express promotes children's school success by providing summer learning experiences focused on the development of reading skills and two nutritious meals daily. Under the leadership of West Virginia University Extension Service, various federal, state and local partners fund Energy Express. In 2018, Energy Express had 87 sites in 40 counties in West Virginia.
Selected as one of the top 51 AmeriCorps programs in the country, Energy Express has a demonstrated record of getting things done, according to a news release. In 2018, pre/post-tests indicated that 67 percent of children maintained or increased reading scores, and the average child gained 1.7 months in broad reading achievement, the release noted.
"The program depends on the hard work and dedication of education professionals who serve as site supervisors," a spokesperson noted. Site supervisors are more than a site administrator, managing the day-to-day site activities. "The site supervisor is the heart of the program as they mentor, train, and supervise a team of 5-8 highly motivated and energetic AmeriCorps members who serve as mentors or community coordinators."
Mentors, mostly college students, create a print-rich environment focused on reading, writing and art that makes learning fun in a small-group setting, according to the release. Community coordinators recruit, train and supervise parent and community volunteers who read and write one-on-one with children and support art, drama and noncompetitive recreational games and activities.
Site supervisors must have a bachelor's degree in education or equivalent experience and must not have overlapping contracts for the dates of June 7 through July 26. Site supervisors earn $4,750 and must attend the site leadership training held in April and the county level in June.

Steubenville City Schools
retirees gather for luncheon
STEUBENVILLE -- Thirty-two retirees of Steubenville City Schools gathered for a Christmas luncheon held Dec. 13 at Dee Jay's Restaurant in Weirton.
A gift exchange was held, with retirees choosing a gift according to the year they retired. Money was collected again for the Christmas charity for needy adults. Cards were signed for those not in attendance.
The next luncheon will be held Jan. 10 at Naples Spaghetti House.
Three Score Seniors
hold December meeting
WEIRTON -- The Three Score Seniors Group held its December meeting at Undo's with President Kathy McCarrick extending the welcome.
Mary Margaret Klepadlo gave the invocation and the benediction.
Winnie Kemp, sunshine chair, gave a report on cards that had been sent and noted couples observing wedding anniversaries.
Officers from 2018 agreed to continue serving in their positions during 2019. McCarrick continues as president; Mary Ellen Groves, vice president; Barbara Purks, secretary; and George Pohlman, treasurer. Cookie Veltri introduced each officer and explained their office duties.
Pohlman delivered his Christmas joke.
Prizes given by Jim Hare, Lee Edwards, Betty Virtue and Veltri were poinsettias, boxes of candy, fruit baskets, Wal-Mart gift cards and Undo's certificates.
Happy holiday wishes were extended to the membership by McCarrick.
There will be no meeting held in January.
Mingo Knights to host
all-you-can-eat spaghetti meal
MINGO JUNCTION -- The Mingo Junction Knights of Columbus Council No. 4361 will host an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Jan. 13.
The meal cost is $9 for adults and $4 for students. Children under age 4 eat for free.
The hall is located at 117 Legion Drive.
