Local resident Phillip Rawson traveled to Field Middle School in Mogadore, Ohio, on Sunday for the first tournament of the Canton Scholastic Chess League. Rawson played in the under 1,000 section and went undefeated, earning a first-place trophy. Rawson is a member of the Catholic Central High School Chess Club and the Fellowship of the Pawns Youth Chess Club. Any student at Catholic Central High School is welcome to join the CCHS Chess Club, which meets Tuesday afternoons immediately after school. The Fellowship of the Pawns Youth Chess Club is a community club, meanwhile, that meets at First Westminster Presbyterian Church, 235 N. Fourth St., Steubenville, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. every Tuesday. All youth in the community who are interested in learning or playing chess are welcome to attend. For information, check out the club's website at fellowshipofthepawns.wordpress.com.
