Weirton Shriners hosting
fundraiser breakfast Saturday
WEIRTON -- The Weirton Shriners will be hosting a fundraiser pancake breakfast from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Northern Panhandle Shrine Club, located at the end of Cove Road by the state highway garage.
It is open to the public.
The menu will include pancakes, eggs, sausage, coffee and orange juice. The meal cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children ages 6 to 12. It is free for children under age 6.
Lego build set for Jan. 28
at Mary H. Weir Library
WEIRTON -- The Mary H. Weir Public Library will offer a Lego build in honor of International Lego Day. It will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Jan. 28.
Lego play encourages creativity, social skills through team work, fine motor skills and more. No reservations are required. Doors to the activity room will open at 5 p.m.
Influenza of 1918 will be
presenter's topic Saturday
BURGETTSTOWN -- The Jefferson Township Historical Society, Eldersville, will hold its January monthly meeting at 10 a.m. on Saturday in the White Church building located on Fire Road across from the Jefferson Township Fire Hall.
Presenter Chris Sedlak will discuss the influenza of 1918, the pandemic that predominantly killed previously healthy young adults. In the United States, about 28 percent of the population became infected, and 500,000 to 675,000 died.
A special part of the event will be an authentic 1918 lunch of macaroni soup homemade from a recipe in the 1916 U.S. Army cooks manual.
The Jefferson Township Historical Society's Museum will be opened for visitors following Sedlak's presentation. It is open to the public.
Beta Alpha Chapter gets
update on scholarship meeting
STEUBENVILLE -- The Beta Alpha Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa Teacher's Sorority met Jan. 8 at Malara Hall in Steubenville. President Peggy Pyle presided. Pam Fithen, chaplain, read 12 quotes for a better life and offered a New Year's prayer.
Pyle led the business meeting that included the acknowledgment of thank-you notes from the Aim Women's Center, Urban Mission Ministries, Valley Hospice and the Jefferson County Humane Society.
Club members completed a crossword puzzle involving the names of past and present ADK leaders.
Scholarship Chairman Clara Joyce announced that her committee would meet on April 9 at the Schiappa Branch of the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County to select the winner of the ADK high school scholarship.
Pyle announced that the state president is encouraging all members to attend conventions, apply for awards and new scholarships and to attract new members.
Money was collected for Big Brothers and Big Sisters. Funds were sent to Akron since there is no longer a local presence.
Members played board games and cards during the social hour. Winners received prizes.
Hostesses for the evening were Cil Fritz, Kathy Henry and Terri Starkey.
The organization's next meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Feb. 5 at Malara Hall. David Krause will present a program titled, "Trips for Fun Seekers."
Toronto Senior Citizens
get report on upcoming trips
TORONTO -- Doris Matyas presided at the Toronto Senior Citizens meeting held Jan. 10.
Joyce Zimmerman gave the blessing for the covered-dish dinner and led the members in opening exercises. Reports were given by Fran Sheets and Rosemary Bonofine.
Nancy Stanak gave a report on upcoming trips, including, May 30-31, Dayton; June 22, Pittsburgh Pirates baseball game; July 18, mystery trip; Aug 17, Hartville; and Sept. 16-19, Ocean City. Call (740) 537-2895 or (740) 537-3064 if interested.
A.G. Rock won the 50/50 drawing. Door prize winners were Barbara Losey, Emma Spicer, Mary Scott and Deanne Grant. Bingo winners were Charles Barker, Doris Matyas, Barbara Schroyer and Pat Richardson.
The next meeting will be held Jan. 24 at the Roosevelt Building.
