Dunbar Recreation Center

to hold first MLK celebration

WEIRTON — The Dunbar Recreation Center, located at 300 Kessel St. and Weir Avenue, will hold its first Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration on Monday with the observance featuring two events.

The first will be a march honoring the well-known civil rights leader. Anyone interested in participating in the march will line up at 10 a.m. at Christ the King Family Worship Center on Weir Avenue and walk to the Dunbar Recreation Center, beginning at 11 a.m.

Following the march, a program will begin at noon and feature Jonathon Curenton as the guest speaker. A 1994 graduate of Madonna High School, Curenton graduated from Hampton University in 1999 with a degree in sociology and went on to earn his master’s degree in public administration.

He had been in the criminal justice field from 1998 to 2018. He returned to Weirton in November of 2018 and works in the medical billing office at Weirton Medical Center.

Children who will be participating in the program include Luciana Bender, Gianna Bonar, Derrick Hague, Chance Magnone, Gianna Miller, Keilani Stafford, Amir Williams and Leo Magnone.

Country Friends announces

lineup of entertainment

COLLIERS — Country Friends will host the Neon Knights on Friday and the Moonlite Special on Saturday to entertain at the Memorial Hall located at 67 Police Lodge Road, Colliers.

The doors open at 6 p.m, the dance starts at 7 p.m., and the hall closes at 10 p.m. for both events. There is a $5 cover charge per person on dance nights.

Open mic is Monday. The doors open at 4 p.m., the covered-dish meal is served at 5 p.m., and open mic begins at 6 p.m. and ends at 9 p.m. There is no cover charge on Mondays, but donations are appreciated.

Blessing of the Ohio River

scheduled for Sunday

WEIRTON — A Pan-Orthodox Ohio River Blessing will be held at the Steubenville Marina on Sunday, beginning at 2 p.m.

The parishes involved include St. Nicholas and All Saints Orthodox Churches in Weirton, Holy Trinity and Holy Resurrection Orthodox Churches in Steubenville, St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in Barton, St. John the Divine Orthodox Church in Wheeling, and the Orthodox Church of the Life-Giving Fountain in Martins Ferry along with other clergy and faithful from surrounding areas.

The blessing is done in conjunction with the Feast of Holy Theophany where Christ was baptized by John in the Jordan River whereby sanctifying the waters, an event spokesperson explained. This second river blessing and service have become an annual January event, bringing together the Orthodox churches and their faithful for a joint service.

Friends of Smithfield offering

$500 general scholarship

SMITHFIELD — Friends of Smithfield Community Development Corp. is offering a $500 general scholarship to a high school senior.

The presentation will be made July 13 at the Smithfield High School Alumni banquet. Being a descendant of a Smithfield High School graduate is a requirement.

The application deadline is May 15, and forms are now available at area high schools. Anyone out of the local area can contact Friends of Smithfield, P.O. Box 73, Smithfield, OH 43948, or Linda Helt at (740) 733-7525 to have an application mailed.

Get in shape while

listening to a book

STEUBENVILLE — “Playaway with us and get in shape while listening to a book from the library.”

The Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County has teamed with the YMCA Wellness Center at St. John Arena to offer a discounted price for the days library participants will spend walking as a group.

At 10 a.m. on Jan. 21-25, participants will meet at the YMCA and walk while listening to the Playaway, “The President Is Missing” by Bill Clinton and James Patterson. A Playaway is a pre-loaded audiobook.

Then on Jan. 28 at 10 a.m., the participants will meet at the Schiappa Branch to discuss the book. For details, call (740) 282-8475.

‘Small Foot’ on Jan. 26

WEIRTON — The Mary H. Weir Public Library will present “Small Foot,” rated PG, on Jan. 26, beginning at 2 p.m.

Admission and popcorn are free. Guests are welcome to bring their own snacks and soft drinks.

The accessible Walnut Street doors will open at 1:45 p.m. No reservations are necessary.

Toronto Sunrise Seniors name

Bill Black member of month

TORONTO — The Toronto Sunrise Seniors met at the Roosevelt Center on Jan. 11, welcoming the new year and new committee assignments.

President Barbara Pritts conducted the meeting and offered the blessing for the covered-dish meal.

Following the meal, Pritts thanked the kitchen committee and members recited the pledge of allegiance. Ruth White, Susan Kulstad and Nancy Bodrog were recognized for their efforts in making the Christmas dinner a success.

Secretary Laura Sheets conducted the roll call of officers and read the minutes of the previous meeting. Judy Sabol gave the financial report, and Nina Kavanagh, social secretary, announced birthdays and anniversaries for December and the first half of January. Cards will be sent to two members with health concerns.

Members were encouraged to sign up for two potential spring trips with details to be available at the next meeting.

Bill Black was recognized as member of the month. Pritts concluded the meeting by sharing some humorous New Year’s resolutions.

Bob Deku and Donna Twyford won the 50-50 drawing. Bingo winners included Nancy Bodrog, Lucy Timko, Betty Mossor, Don Pritts, Gloria Howard, Carolyn McCart, Helen Bayne, Rita Carnahan, Barbara Pritts and Paul Zink. Scat winners were John Lash, Nancy Bodrog and Gloria Howard.

The next meeting will be held Jan. 25.
