Relay for Life meeting set for Tuesday at EGCC

STEUBENVILLE -- Planning for the 2019 Jefferson County Relay for Life will continue during a meeting set for Tuesday in room 1504 at Eastern Gateway Community College, 4000 Sunset Boulevard, beginning at 6 p.m.

Anyone interested in participating in the fundraiser for the American Cancer Society is welcome to attend and get involved, according to Emily Russell, who is co-chairing the summer event along with Tom Simmons.

The 2019 Jefferson County Relay for Life will be held in a new location and return to an extended time frame. The Toronto Jr.-Sr. High School Clarke Hinkle Stadium, 300 Myers St., Toronto, will be the first-time site of the ACS fundraiser.

It will begin at 6 p.m on June 21 and continue until 9 a.m. June 22.

The relay traditionally had been held at the Robert Kettlewell Memorial Stadium at Indian Creek High School in Wintersville. Passage of the school district's bond issue in May, however, for new and improved school buildings necessitated a search for other venue options as construction could make the site unavailable.

The 2018 relay was held in an abbreviated one-day format at Wintersville, but the 2019 relay will span overnight as in years past.

The theme for this year's relay is a Disney-oriented one -- "Where Cures Come True." Each team is encouraged to pick a movie for their tent decorations.

The relay raises funds to help the American Cancer Society with research, patient services, advocacy and education. It welcomes the public to participate, donate or just observe what is a community-oriented event offering food, live entertainment and fun in a setting that honors survivors and those who have lost their battle, according to organizers.

This year's goal is to raise $100,000, according to Russell.

"We would love it if anyone would like to join us," Russell said. "That's what our meetings are for."

Discussion at Tuesday's meeting will include entertainment for the relay and sponsorships.

Russell can be contacted via e-mail at emily.relay19@gmail.com. The ACS representative is Rikki Batson, community development manager. Her e-mail is rikki.batson@cancer.org.
