FOLLANSBEE -- Where do the bees go in the winter?
Come join West Virginia University Extension Service Brooke and Hancock County and find out when Joe Kovaleski shares the mystery of how bees survive the winter and a whole lot more.
Kovaleski, a Steubenville resident, has been in the bee business for more than 25 years, starting with helping his son work on a Bee-keeping merit badge. He decided he was really interested in the life of bees and stuck with them.
The discussion on all things bees will be held at 6 p.m. on Feb. 6 at the Brooke County Library Follansbee Branch, located at 844 Main St., Follansbee.
Some of the topics to be covered include how and why bees pollinate and why it is crucial to the world's survival; how people affect the health of bees; and the difference between the varies species of bees that there are.
Aggressive yellow jackets, for example, will sting multiple times because they can, and the docile honey bees, meanwhile, will only sting if they feel their colony is threatened.
Besides sharing his expertise about bees, Kovaleski helps homeowners get rid of unwanted bee swarms and other issues. He and his wife, Suzan, also sell honey and many bee-related products.
After the discussion about bees, Extension representatives will give a brief overview of the WVU Hancock Brooke County Extension Service Master Gardener Program.
The presentation is open to the public, and light refreshments will be served. Those planning to attend are asked to contact Ann at (304) 564-3805.
