Brilliant American Legion to
honor the Four Chaplains
BRILLIANT -- Seventy-six years ago, in the morning hours of Feb. 3, 1943 the U.S. Army transport ship Dorchester was hit by a torpedo while steaming through the icy waters off Greenland.
On board were four Army chaplains -- 1st Lts. Clark V. Poling, Reformed Church of America; Alexander D. Goode, Jewish; John P. Washington, Catholic; and George L. Fox, Methodist.
The four chaplains led the men on board to boxes of life jackets and passed them out to the soldiers. When the boxes were empty, the four chaplains gave their own life jackets to four young GI and told them to jump.
Twenty-five minutes later, the Dorchester sank. As the ship went down, survivors in nearby rafts could see the four chaplains -- arms linked and braced against the slanting deck. Their voices also could be heard offering prayers to the one God they all served.
Of the 902 men aboard the U.S.A.T. Dorchester, 672 died, leaving 230 survivors. When the news reached American shores, the nation was stunned by the magnitude of the tragedy and heroic conduct of the four chaplains.
Each year on the first Sunday of February, the American Legion honors the ultimate sacrifice of these four U.S. Army chaplains. The Brilliant American Legion will be among them.

St. Agnes CWC to host
March 3 deanery meeting
MINGO JUNCTION -- The St. Agnes Catholic Woman's Club members held their January meeting in the church parish hall with Pat Cramblett presiding.
The Rev. James Dunfee led the women in the CWC prayer before the meeting. It was followed by the pledge of allegiance.
Cramblett welcomed the women, thanking them for all their hard work on the pumpkin roll sales, which was "very successful." She also gave a report on the Christmas party.
Clara Sue Milewsky, secretary, and Barbara Crugnale, treasurer, gave reports.
Kathy Coldebella gave a report on cards sent to parishioners.
Cleaning the kitchen was discussed as well as the cabinets.
Dunfee thanked the members for their Christmas gift. He also discussed the Aim Women's Center.
It was announced that St. Agnes CWC will be hosting the next deanery meeting, which will be held March 3. All the women are invited.
Hostesses for the evening were Jean Mazik, Mary Ross and Kathy Flippo.
The next meeting will be held Feb. 26. Hostesses will be Paula Robson, Rose Ann Sacco, Kathy Coldebella, Karen Sabatino and Jane Crisante.
Dunfee led the closing prayer.
The door prize was won by Patty Kosikowski and the drawing by Paula Robson.
Lamb and chicken gyro
sale scheduled Feb. 12
STEUBENVILLE -- The Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church Philoptochos Society will hold its last gyro sale of the season on Feb. 12 at the church, located at 300 S. Fourth St., and there are two kinds -- lamb and chicken.
The sales runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be gyros for $7 and chicken gyros for $8. There will be a 25 cent charge for extra tzatziki sauce. Also available are koulourakia (twist cookies) for $6 a dozen.
There is free delivery available for orders of four or more gyros. Orders may be phoned in to (740) 282-9835 the day of the sale or sent by Fax to (740) 282-2091. Patrons should allow a minimum of 20 minutes for phone and Fax orders. Walk-ins also are welcome.

Women install new officers
RICHMOND -- Marge Andres, newly installed president of the Richmond United Methodist Women, led the Jan. 24 meeting held at the church fellowship hall.
Sue Frye installed the new officers who are, in addition to Andres, Vice President Gloria Mercer; honorary Vice President Pastor Georgette Gaston, Secretary Barbara Grimm and Treasurer Joyce Proffitt.
Frye used the purpose of the United Methodist Women as her theme. Each member received a book mark featuring the printed purpose,
Mercer led the program on the women who saved Moses, using as a reference scripture Exodus 1: 2-10. Readers were Frye, Proffitt and Betty Hout.
Reports were given by Grimm and Proffitt. New program books were given to members. Andres explained the old pictures used in the books were taken from old scrapbooks that are deteriorating and this was a way to save and enjoy them.
Mercer reported the "2 cents a week money" will be taken to the spring district meeting set for April 11 at Thoburn United Methodist Church in St. Clairsville. The money will be given to Refuge 1:99.
Andres read an article from Response Magazine titled "A Way Forward."
Frye closed the meeting with prayer. Peggy Pratt was hostess. The next meeting will be held Feb. 28.
Extravaganza raises funds
for local ministry outreach
WINTERSVILLE -- The 10th-annual Valentine's Craft Extravaganza for St. Vincent dePaul Ministry will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Feb. 10 at Blessed Sacrament Church's social hall, 852 Main St.
"This event offers a unique opportunity for our community to support the local craftspeople as well as St. Vincent dePaul," noted Linda Freed, event coordinator. "It is a perfect time to buy that special gift for Valentine's Day and help support St. Vincent dePaul," Freed said. "We are at full capacity with the overwhelming support of more than 30 vendors offering jewelry, lotions, candles, wreaths, a variety of baked goods, wood crafts, kettle corn and many other unique items," Freed said. The extravaganza will host 31 vendors, 30 inside Sargus Hall, and a kettle corn trailer outside.
"Bernie Matuska and her kitchen crew will offer a delicious lunch menu throughout the event, for dine in and carryout," Freed noted. A highlight of the event is a homemade lunch served from noon to 3 p.m. The menu includes wedding soup, stuffed pepper soup, meatball sandwiches, sloppy joes, macaroni salad, pies, cakes and pastries and beverages. Carryout is available.
St. Vincent De Paul is a ministry of Blessed Sacrament and Our Lady of Lourdes Churches in Wintersville. The primary function of it is a food pantry that serves Wintersville and Bloomingdale residents on the third Thursday of each month. St. Vincent also provides special holiday food baskets for Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas and Easter candy and Christmas gifts for children. Distribution information for the pantry is available by calling (740) 264-9547.
The extravaganza serves as the only fundraiser for the ministry, and all money realized is used to purchase food.
There is no admission fee to the extravaganza that includes some special drawings and a door prize.

Knights to hold fundraiser
breakfast at St. Peter's
STEUBENVILLE -- Members of the Knights of Columbus Cardinal Neuman will sponsor their traditional fundraiser breakfast at St. Peter's Church from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. It is open to the public.
The menu includes scrambled eggs, baked ham, applesauce and fruits, roasted potatoes and pancakes. The meal cost is $3 for children and $7 for adults with a maximum of $35 for a family.
The profits will benefit Sts. Louis and Elizabeth Secular Franciscan Fraternity's charitable activities.

STEUBENVILLE -- For anyone looking to enter or re-enter the work force, Urban Mission Ministries has a new program called Jobs for Life.
The eight-week course will provide anyone with the confidence "to serve out their God-given gifts and abilities and become sustainable at the same time," according to information in the mission's February newsletter.
