Steubenville Woman's Club

to meet March 4

STEUBENVILLE -- The OFWC/GFWC Woman's club of Steubenville will resume meetings as of March 4 after a two-month winter hiatus.

Members will convene in a new location - the Laurels at 500 Stanton Blvd.

The program will feature Ruston Baker of Millersburg, speaking about local mural projects he has been involved in. They include his depiction of President Abraham Lincoln and Steubenville natives Edwin Stanton and David Homer Bates, a telegrapher. It is on the Pflug building on North Third Street.

Baker also has done murals in Toronto. One is at the corner of Clark and Fourth Street and depicts images in the life of Noah Long, son of David and Katie Long, who died of leukemia on July 28, 2014. Another one is a salute to veterans and depicts an American flag on the left and a representation of all branches of the military.

More recently, Baker did the "Hang On Sloopy" mural located on the building that houses Froehlich's Classic Corner Restaurant. It honors Steubenville native Dorothy Sloop, a jazz pianist and inspiration for the 1964 song "Hang On Sloppy" by The McCoys. The artwork also honors Steubenville resident Anthony Violi, the 100-year-old Ohio State University graduate and oldest band alumnus who recently was honored by the school. He was asked to "dot the I" during the band's halftime performance on Sept. 22 and to serve as the VIP grand marshal at the school's homecoming parade on Oct. 5. The OSU band is known for playing the song.

The Moses Fleetwood Walker mural, located in the 100 block of North Third Street in Steubenville, was dedicated Oct. 7 on what was the first observance of Moses Fleetwood Walker Day across Ohio. Walker, who was born in Mount Pleasant, was the first African-American to play professional baseball.

Carlotta Jordan, woman's club president, will preside for the noon luncheon meeting and for an 11 a.m. session of the board of directors. Ruth Sperry and Trudy Wilson will be greeters.
