Spring Calendar Luncheon

set for April 6 in Weirton

WEIRTON — Members of the Garden Department of the GFWC-WV Weirton Woman’s Club welcome the public to the 17th-annual Spring Calendar Luncheon, which will be held at noon on April 6 at Undo’s Holiday Inn, Weirton.

Musical entertainment will be provided by former Legends member Scotty Hicks.

Tickets are $25 and available for “this colorful event welcoming spring” by contacting Sharon Neeley at (304) 479-0734.

Garden department members have hosted the fundraising event to sponsor scholarships to students pursuing an education in the fields of environmental sciences, agriculture, horticulture or forestry. They also provide two camperships to W.Va. Department of Environmental Protection Junior Conservation Camp held at Cedar Lakes, W.Va.

Locally, the club has improved the flower beds at the Mary H. Weir Public Library and donated to the Camp Aura improvement projects.

“This garden department of the GFWC Weirton Woman’s Club has been active in the community for 80 years,” a spokesperson noted.

Maralyn Ridgeway serves as chairman of the garden department and co-chairman of the luncheon. Helen Gibson is president of the Weirton Woman’s Club, which is a member of the General Federation of Woman’s Clubs.

Animal Abuse Awareness

observance on Monday

WINTERSVILLE — In observance of Animal Abuse Awareness Month in April, the Jefferson County Humane Society will be observing a moment of silence from 11 a.m. to 11:05 a.m. in remembrance of those animals suffering in silence, according to Brandi DeNoon Damewood, community outreach manager.

All month we are doing activities to bring awareness,” she explained.

On March 23, representatives of Cub Scouts Pack 525 wrote the names of more than 100 animal saved through the humane society and the original owners were fully prosecuted, Damewood said. “Our sidewalks are decorated with chalk in honor of those saved.”

On Saturday, Cub Scouts from Pack 146 were anticipated to redo the sidewalk chalk names that had been washed away by rain.

“April 1st will be done live on Facebook,” Damewood said of the observance. “We are hoping people will participate, even if they are not on Facebook. That is the beauty of this awareness activity — it is inclusive to everyone. Kids in school. People at their jobs. People without transportation, etc.,” she explained.

One fundraiser will involve the sale of special ribbons, hopefully beginning Monday.

“I used my Cricut and cut the 130 names of pets rescued, rehabilitated and rehomed through the Jefferson County Humane Society from the prosecuted humane cases that owners were punished through the court system,” Damewood said, noting Toronto High School Key club members are assembling the project she designed — orange ribbon that has one name of one of those animals. “Those animals that suffered in silence for so long, now have a big voice,” she added. “There have been 56 prosecuted cases from 2015 to 2018 and an additional 15 pending prosecution,” she said.

On Tuesday, West Liberty’s Senior Capstone Students will host a celebrity server night to benefit the Jefferson County Animal Shelter. It will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Undo’s in Weirton. During the event, the students also will hold a Chinese auction and a 50/50 drawing to raise additional funds for the shelter. Fifteen percent of sales will be donated to the shelter.

“The big idea is speak up for those suffering in silence,” Damewood said of the monthlong observance. “Only one little phone call could be a matter of life or death for an animal suffering in silence,” she added, referring to the phone number being (740) 314-5583.

Other activities for the month are in the planning stages.
