Country Friends announces
weekend entertainment
COLLIERS — Country Friends will not hold a Friday event this week but will host the Neon Knights on Saturday at the Memorial Hall located at 67 Police Lodge Road, Colliers.
The doors open at 6 p.m., the dance starts at 7 p.m., and the hall closes at 10 p.m. for both events. There is a $5 cover charge per person on dance nights.
Open mic is Monday. The doors open at 4 p.m., the covered-dish meal is served at 5 p.m., and open mic begins at 6 p.m. and ends at 9 p.m. There is no cover charge on Mondays, but donations are appreciated.

Raising backyard chicken
flock topic of program
CADIZ — Val Gardner will share tips and tricks on raising a backyard chicken flock during a special presentation set for Monday (April 8) at the Puskarich Public Library, located at 200 E. Market St., Cadiz. It will begin at 6 p.m.
The event will include a “make-and-take boredom buster, a three-pack of healthy chicken flock blocks. It is similar to a wild songbird suet cake.
There also will be games and prizes with participants encouraged to bring a photo of their funniest chicken. The photos will be voted on and a prize awarded. Participants also can enter to win “a huge 1 No. mega Chubbie mealworm bucket — these are like the nightcrawlers of mealworms,” a library spokesperson noted. Story time will offer a forum in which to share a favorite chicken tale.
All ages are welcome to attend the program. Call (740) 942-2623 to register. The cost for the evening is $10 to help cover the cost of supplies.
Hilda Kotur celebrates
her centennial birthday
STEUBENVILLE — Hilda Kotur, formerly of Steubenville, recently celebrated her 100th birthday in Santa Maria, Calif.
Her centennial celebration included four days of festivities, starting with a party at Merrill Gardens to an overflow crowd; civic recognition; a live band; champagne and cake. It concluded with a private family dinner party at the historic Santa Maria Inn with more than 30 in attendance.
Hilda Kotur was born Scholastica Wierzbicka in 1919 in Steubenville to a family with eight children. In 1941 she married Melvin Kotur and raised six children in Steubenville. They are Judy, Joan and Bob, all of California; Melvin of Montana; Jim of Washington; and Tom of Wintersville. Twelve grandchildren and four great-grandchildren complete the family.
In 1983, she and her husband retired to Rio Ranch, New Mexico, and in 2013, she and her sister, Kay, relocated to Santa Maria, Calif.
She credits her longevity and quality of life to her Polish heritage, faith, family, friendships and humor and notes “Family, like branches on a tree, we all grow in different directions, yet our roots remain as one.”
Irondale UMC to host
fish fry dinner Friday
IRONDALE — Irondale United Methodist Church will host a fish fry dinner from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Friday at the church, which is located on Grant Street.
The menu will be a cod fish dinner or fish sandwich, potatoes, green beans, cole slaw, roll, dessert and drink by donation to the church. Patrons can dine in or get carryout. For information, call (330) 532-3790 the day of the dinner.
Quarter auction Saturday
at Steubenville church
STEUBENVILLE — As part of its 20th anniversary celebration, Mount Carmel Community Baptist Church will host a quarter auction from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at First Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 235 N. Fourth St.
The event is open to the public. Doors open at 12:30 p.m., and the auction begins at 1 p.m. PM and the Auction begins at 1:00 PM. Admission of $5 includes one paddle with additional paddles available for $2 each.
Vendor tables are available for $25 per table.
Indoor yard and food sale
Saturday in Unionport
UNIONPORT — A large indoor yard sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Wayne Township Community Center in Unionport.
Food also will be available for sale.
Proceeds benefit the upkeep of the community center, which is the site of the old Unionport School.

retirees meet for lunch
STEUBENVILLE — Twenty retirees of Steubenville City Schools met March 14 for lunch at Mario’s Restaurant in Weirton.
Get well cards were signed. The group’s next outing will be lunch at 12:30 p.m. April 11 at Dee Jay’s in Weirton. All retirees are welcome to attend.
Riverfest committee to hold
craft show on Saturday
NEW CUMBERLAND — The Riverfest Committee of New Cumberland will hold a craft show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the New Cumberland Fire Hall on state Route 2, New Cumberland. Easter egg hunt set for Sunday
STEUBENVILLE — Pleasant Hill’s Baseball/Softball League will be holding an Easter egg hunt on April 7 at the Pleasant Hill baseball fields. It begins at 1:30 p.m. All children are welcome. The age groups are 1-4, 5-7 and 8-10.
