‘Libraries = Strong Communities’ is theme for celebration of National Library Week

STEUBENVILLE -- Celebrate National Library Week, April 7-13 at the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County by stopping in to get a free backpack at checkout, while supplies last.

"National Library Week is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation's libraries and library workers and to promote library use and support," explained Jennifer Cesta, public relations coordinator for the library system.

"From free access to books and online resources for families to library business centers that help support entrepreneurship and retraining, libraries offer opportunity to all," Cesta noted.

The theme for 2019 National Library Week is "Libraries = Strong Communities." To celebrate, the local library system will welcome Jim Kleefeld of Avon, Ohio, for a presentation of "Ohio's Romantic Tragedies: Stories of Love, Loss and Rekindling from the 1920s, '30s, and '40s" at the Schiappa Branch on April 11, beginning at 6 p.m. Register in advance by calling the library at 264-6166.

"Ohio's Romantic Tragedies" is a 60-minute talk and display of stories and artifacts from the early 1900s. Kleefeld shares stories of couples, famous and unknown, whose lives became entwined and then entangled.

"'Ohio's Romantic Tragedies' is a presentation adults will love," Cesta said. "Jim brings a collection of antique and unusual artifacts and will share the stories behind them. You will see and learn about a 1933 license plate, a strange wedding photo, a rich family that simply squandered away its fame and fortune and more."

Kleefeld includes references to the books, papers and online research he has used while investigating "these fascinating historical couple and their sometimes-doomed relationships."
