Tree planted on Earth Day

-- Contributed

For the past three years, the New Cumberland Community Projects committee has planted a tree in one of the city parks to celebrate Earth Day. The first year, it was an osage orange seedling planted in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Lewis and Clark expedition. The explorers passed by near New Cumberland on their trip west. The second year, it was a willow tree planted near the gazebo in Hines Park. This year, three trees were planted. A pink dogwood was added to Pride Park on Ridge Avenue, and a river birch and a white dogwood were placed in Hines Park. Committee chairman George Hines was in charge of planting each of the trees, with help from his granddaughter Sophie Hines. They were joined this year by a new volunteer in Patty Richmond, the 5-year-old daughter of Ron and Lora Richmond of New Cumberland, who helped plant the pink dogwood tree that was donated by her parents. From left in Pride Park are Hines, Patty and Sophie.
