Six area students were honored during Cove Presbyterian Church’s morning worship service June 2 with scholarships presented by the Cove Endowment Committee. The Chad Pickens Scholarship was initiated by Dolores and Clark Pickens in honor of their son, Chad, who died from a head injury while playing baseball for Weir High School. This scholarship is for Cove student members only. This year’s recipients are siblings Noah and Sierra Huey, the children of Bernie and Beth Huey of Weirton. Noah will be a third-year cyber security student at West Virginia Northern Community College, and Sierra, who recently graduated from Weir High School, was accepted in general studies at WVNCC. The Helen Hamill Scholarship was begun by Carl and Jerry Hamill in memory of their mother, Helen, to help area students realize their dream of a college education. This scholarship is open to all four high schools in Brooke and Hancock counties. This year’s recipients include Philip Hinerman, son of James and Sheila Hinerman of Weirton, and a graduate of Weir High School who will attend West Virginia University in secondary education; Abigail Nickerson, daughter of Jason and Amy Nickerson of Wellsburg, a graduate of Madonna High School who will attend West Virginia University in exercise physiology; and Lonni Riggs, daughter of Lonny and Jayda Riggs of Follansbee, who graduated from Madonna High School and will attend Franciscan University of Steubenville for its nursing program. The Robert “Bud” Schmitt Scholarship was instituted 38 years ago by Flora Schmitt in memory of her son, Bud, who was killed in an automobile accident. This is for Cove Presbyterian Church members who have a calling to go into the ministry. Roger Criss, husband of Patricia Criss, is the first recipient of this scholarship to attend the Pittsburgh Seminary. He is a retired Weirton police officer and resource officer at Weir High School and has three sons and four grandsons. The scholarship winners are seen with the Rev. Ed Rudiger, pastor of Cove Presbyterian Church.
